I am looking to see how everyone mounted their 292 Y-Block's in their deuce frames. I was thinking of making my own mounts, but, before I begin, I'd like to see what everyone has done for theirs. No sense reinventing the wheel, yet. Thanks in advance. JL

In 1965 I bought an old drag coup '32 Ford that had used a Y block. The guy had cut the crossmember out of the doner car and welded it into the '32 frame. The Y block mounted like stock. Sure screwed up that frame.

First is it a Truck or Car 292?
The cars engine uses a side engine mounts like a later model engine. Trucks have a horseshoe shaped front engine mount and a pair of ears on the bellhousing for rear mounts. The truck style mounts would likely be the easiest to adapt to you duece frame, IMHO.

1956 Mercury, out of a car, going in a 32 Roadster, unless I find a 3 window body before then. Transmission=TH400. (FWIW-I'm racing it)

Didn't know there was an adapter for TH400 behind a Y. C4 is an easy swap though, they can be built real strong and weigh less than that chevy slushbox. Probably gonna have to just build some towers on the rails, unless you switch the 292 to truck mounts but an auto bell will be an issue then. Here is a link to a bell that may interest you.

here are some we built to put our y-block in the test stand, would be pretty easy to build some that use the standard biscuit mount...

So out of curiosity, you running a 3x2, hilborn inj, 4bbl, or what on it? Cam? Stroker crank?
just for fun I am running a cast iron 4bbl, car manifolds, with duals & Cherry Bombs.

Before I pulled it from the parts truck...........

This was just before the car manifolds were put on, still alot to do but it didn't clean up too bad.

Oh, the Uni isn't all white anymore either.

thanks for the inputs...I was going to go with the C5, but, I screwed up and told the guy who bought my car he could have it....DOH! I'm still lookign for a good C5 core. Until then, the TH400 it is. Anywho, I plan on using the stock intake until I find a better one, within my price range. Acoorcing to Y blcoks forever, my intake is one of the best you can get, so I am running it. Too tired to look up numbers...I'll get em later. As far as the cam goes, it is gonna be the stock cam, Isky grind, and nasty at that. Also intend on running an Edelbrock 600 4bbl. I MIGHT have to change the jetting a bit, as all the calculators call for 500 cfm carbs for the 292. Will see. RIght now, I'm getting ready to get the frame, so I can start mockup, then I'll need distributors, headers, etc. The motor runs, but I want to clean it up, and ring and bearing it. Thanks for the pics fellas, as well as the tips. Later JL

Oh, and DAN---how's the weather up there? I grew up in MT, outside of Great Falls, nice little town called Centerville. Military has me in FL now, 7 more years and I'm coming home to MT!

Check out Ch***is Engineering - they may have a biscuit type side mount that should make the mounting process easy.

Sounds Cool JL, Actually the C5 instead of the C4 would be my choice too, at my age I automatically type C4 though, lol. For my purposes I will be going with a T-5 swap. See you on the Y block board too - later.

heres what I did with a truck motor mount, a band saw, and a welder:

Its basically a copy of the hurst y-block mount. if you have flathead mounts, this plus the speedway biscuit mounts will work fine.. still figuring out what to do about the trans mounts.

  12. Here's a Hurst Front Mount that I used to put a 292 in Model A Rails.

I like the hurst mount, what engine type did you use? Also, do I need rear (trans)mounts with the car version? That is only for the truck engines, right?

  14. slepe,
do a search i think hotroddrummer and his dad did one at ionia hotrod shop.

To use the truck engine mounts you will need a truck timing cover, and the truck bellhousing. Look at the T-5 conversion bell on Mummerts site and you will see what I mean. You will also need to be sure your block is drilled/threaded for the truck mount.
Thanks for posting that Hurst Y block mount, after I find a body I'll be building a Y block powered rod too, I'll use a truck 292 - have another one.

  16. Yeah the motor came out of a truck, so it already had the truck bellhousing and timing cover/front mount. It was in a '58 F-100 but the block was a C2AE ('62) 292ci Y-Block. I found the Hurst mount on Ebay for under $100, used Speedway biscuit motor mounts, fabricated my own mounts on the ch***is.

As for the rear mount, I used 1x1" sq tubing, woven rubber "mounts" between, bolted to the bellhousing. I then added a flat strap bridge across the bottom of the 1x1" to strengthen the mount. This was the only thing I could think of so that I could retain the original slave cylinder on the bellhousing without stuff getting in the way. The Y-Block doesn't leave much room for pedals on the frame, so I was going to run a firewall mounted dual setup like Tardel/Ansen style with the 60-61 Chevy C-10 Brake & Clutch MC Combo.

  17. Here's some pics of the mounts on the 28-31 Ch***is. I first boxed the frame, and made mounts that welded to the inside boxed parts of the rails. Then I decided I didn't like the fact that the Y-Block weighs over 600 pounds and figured it put too much downward stress on the boxing plates and mounts with the Hurst front mount.

I cut them away and started over with some mounts that were easy to build from 3/16" plate, and evened out the load on the ch***is by having the downward force on the top AND the inside of the rails. I figured its alot stronger than just welding mounts to the inside of the frame.

No pics of the steel ones welded in, but you get the idea. The stock fuel pump was close to the motor mount, so if you use a Hurst mount, watch out for that. Some 90-degree fittings would cure it.

How far from the front crossmember should the harmonic balancer be?

I also have a tab on the aft drivers side, close to where the trans will hook up to. Is this another motor mount?

    THanks for the help. JL

@HotRodDrummer (Matt) Do you still have the pics?

And for any others out there, maybe we could update this thread? This topic has been on my mind lately.
