I've got this great 26 Model T Tudor Sedan that's been in a garage half a mile from where I live since before I was born (been there since 1979/80). It's in incredible condition and I'm stoked. All the stock parts are there. I'm in the process of verifying all the numbers for registration and ***le transfer. I've found that there was no VIN on the body or frame, and that the engine number matches the Vehicle ID on the ***le. Now I need an odometer for the verifier, but I have a bag of parts that looks like it used to be the original speedo/odo. These two units came with the pile awesomeness. Does the bottom one look like it could be a factory part? One last question, since the Vehicle ID number is on the engine and not the frame, I ***ume I can build a new frame for my project. That's great, because the model t frame is junk. Good steel, but small. I've plans for a 49 Merc flathead. How do I legally put that in and keep everything on the up and up? eh just found out the vin should be stamped below the front wood floor panels, so I've got some work to do pulling that up tomorrow night...Still need to know about the guage though
To my knowledge model T's didn't have speedometers/odometers factory. There are lots of aftermarket ones that were made though. Those both look like roughly the right period. Usually they run off a speedo cable that runs off a gear type setup on one of the front wheels. My experience is mostly with TT (model T 1 Ton trucks) so I might be mistaken about the later (26-27) cars.
Thanks for the info. I kept researching after posting and found that it's an AC speedo, aftermarket like you said. The innards are potmetal and don't typically last too long, which may explain the bundle of parts and dials I have. I have the gear parts that the cable hooks up to, as well as the cable. I'll see what they say when the verifier comes out. First though I need to find the numbers stamped on the rails.
You can simply point out to the Verifier that Model Ts did not come with speedometers or odometers. The aftermarket units like you have are around but you'll have to find all the drive parts for the RH front hub.
I've got those parts and the cable too! I'll show him what I've got and offer the info that they dind't come with one, but I have one that was added at some point. If anyone catches the other question about fabbing a new frame and installing a new engine, I'd still appreciate some insight there, otherwise I'll do more research and/or make a new post when the time comes. First I think I want to get this thing running in it's present condition for tooling around town. Maybe run it at the Antique Nationals
the modelt did come from factory with speedometers and odometers.they where startard till 1914 and in 15 became an opition.they had a gear on the right front wheel for the drive.the top one is a stewart warner model 160 used from 1919-25.the one for 26-27 would be model 490.this guage could be a carry over into 26.ford used all the old parts up first before using the newer stuff.
I have boxed original t frames, the front and rear crosmembers are rivited and usually too week for modern engines. Technically you probably should have the DMV issue you a new Id tag or decal. for your new frame They would probably give you a new number Most guys I know stamp the number on the new frame and as long as you have the original number and paperwork there should be no problem. If you sell the original motor to someone who uses it and try's to get new paperwork using your old number there could be a problem.
Most of the later T's I've seen use a Stewart like the one you posted, depending on the diameter of the gauge. You lucked out with the odometer spools being made out of Bakelite- the ones made with Zamac (potmetal) have almost always grown and cracked. Haven't seen any with an AC speedo.
