Hi, looking for anybody that has paid for and received a Dove 427 SOHC kit. Looking for people that have taken it out of the box, and have had it looked at and checked out by their machine shop. I would like to know what you think of it. Devin
I have a SOHC motor in my AFX car and while I am not personally an expert on the Dove SOHC parts, I can only highly recommend that you find out "What real engine shop has actually built with these parts?", then I would call and talk to the engine builder. Some of the SOHC repo parts require some massaging to make work properly. Take for instance, the Genesis block; the head oil feeds do not match up with stock SOHC head gakets requiring either a head or gasket mod. The cam bearings are also different than in a stock SOHC motor, necessitating some special care and machining. I have succesfully used aftermarket SOHC chains, valves, gaskets, etc. with great luck. I have also used the Genesis block with great luck but only after addressing the subtle differences from the real thing. Be very cautious when dealing with the SOHC parts and talk to an engine builder to two who has some real world experience building with the aftermarket parts your are considering. It is great that Dove and other suppliers are finally building these parts for the SOHC motor which in my eyes was one of the greatest motors that ever came out of Detroit during the 60's. Build a good SOCH motor and you will be very happy. Joe
Best bet with SOHC would be Jim Greene's speed shop, he raced the Greene Elephant, and has something like 4 or 5 cars powered by SOHC motors and he's even local
Or Call Rick Toombs in Friendsville Tennessee just outside of Knoxville. He used to work for Holman and Moody and is an expert on all things FE including the cammer engines. He has worked with ALL of the newly produced cammer parts and can tell you the skinny on them. He can probably get them cheaper too if you are in the market.
Devin I think We met at the Arlington or Bruces last year. You talked to my son Justyn. Yes unfortunatly, Dove has had numerous complaints with there products over the years. From porous castings to poor machining. The FE forum is the best place to resource this. Use the search function Im sure You will find alot of info. Coons is also making Cammer parts that seem to be pretty nice. There are some real cammer gerus over there. Jay Brown, Doug AKA Pumpbuilder and Rod C are some. It will be a while before a Guy can just put one together. Its gonna take take some expereince to get a handle on what will work and not in the aftermarket field. Then to have the equiptment and knowhow to make the corrections. FEDER
I bought one of those kits from Dove. It is junk. I'm looking for the other guys that bought kits. To let them know they need to get them checked out and not let them sit until they are ready to start building them. I bought into the crap about Dove getting it together and making a good part. It didn't happen. I had no idea somebody could send something that bad out to a customer. I have met Bill Coon. He makes a very nice head and other parts as well. I have a set of his heads coming. I'm just trying to let the guys know that bought the kits, they need to get the stuff checked. If anybody is thinking about buying sohc parts they need to think long and hard before they give Dove any money. Devin
So who did you end up going to for Cammer parts? Hope you didn't get caught up in any fiascos. I'm planning a Cammer build in the next year or so too,so please post up all the good experiences,as well as bad. I know it's an old thread, but hopefully by now,the smoke has cleared, and you can provide some important advice for those planning to purchase parts in the future.
