I have been trying to track down a source for bulk molasses in North GA and have not found any. Anyone know of a real feed mill within 100 miles of Atlanta? Bulk is about $2/ gal. while the bottled stuff is $9.

I am familiar with electrolysis rust removal but there are applications (parts) where the molasses/ water solution gets into interior voids like water jackets. I am planning on setting up both.

    Thanks, N B R

PM povertyflats who did a thread on this quite awhile back.
Molasses can be used for livestock, some larger shops have been know to stock smaller quanities, but I have been told molasses is also used to form a base mixture for crop spraying so if you know of some local store that handles poisons and crop spray stuff you maybe able to source it thru them.

It acts as a sticking agent and also a wetting agent in the sprays.

  3. It can be found at feed stores as noted.

I understand that having sulfur in the molasses is the way to go.

Supermarket molasses is sulfur free most times.

Also check homebrewing supply places. Or make a blend of storebought molasses and Vinegar instead of water.

Check your area for restaurant supply houses commercial food service supply house, their commercial baking supply catalogs should have it by the gallon. If you can't get it through them ask at a bakery or the bakery dept of your local grocery store, perhaps the manager can order it by the gallon for you from their source.

Do you derust with 100% molasses or does it get cut with water? Seems I remember a past post claiming the parts soaked for 30 days for it to work. Does it eat the metal away too like vinegar or is it less agressive? How is the part neutralized after the process? Thanks for any inputs!

Thanks guys, I track dowm either Wilsonville or Bainbridge locations.

As for Molasses derusting: The average mi ratio I have read is 6:1...water to Mol. The feed store Molasses is supposed to be better since it has some sulfur in it. Soak for 1 -4 weeks bdepending on rust level. If you leave it in too long I think the metal picks up some hydrogen. I'll be learning onvce I can find the stuff.

I've read that it eats brass and aluminum as well as cast iron. Don't know for sure, I've used it for sheet metal with great result. Good luck!
