This poly thread is for the birds, primarily parrots. The real engines are the early hemis. Chrysler just butchered the hemi up and put stupid looking scalloped valve covers on it, and on some had "spitfire" stamped into the valve covers. Cheap substitute engine. You want a wedge, get a B block!
polys are junk...........R pope doent know what hes talking about! none of the motors hes talking about are polys .........my brother has a rebuilt 318 poly long block he will practicly give away
Actually, the 318 Dual Quad Poly (V800 option) was only available in 1957 in the Plymouth Fury line, which helps to narrow your search. In '58, Plymouth used a one year only engine, the 350 Golden Commano, for which, there was little that would interchange between the two engines, and the intake was no exception. While on the subject of Poly's and power, do a Google search for Gary Pavolich. He has written a couple books on hopping up these ol' iron workhorses, and I believe has a Yahoo Groups site dedicated to them (Q&A type forum). Loads of info there, as well as parts resources. ~MyDeSoto~ (318 Poly in a '58. but will be dressed as a '57 Fury engine) PS, if you find the AIR CLEANERS that went with that manifold THEN you have REALLY found something! I have had an easier time finding Hen's Teeth than those air cleaners that didnt require me getting a second mortgage to buy em!
Header for your 318 -http://bfghemicuda.com/WebStore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_7&products_id=22 Get the cam reground and you should have something.
I called bullshit a while back on that, but it's true - with a little modification, early LA heads will indeed fit a Poly block. Just not the other way around. ~Jason
LOL! Don't tell anybody, but my little Poly collection is coming in handy - I just got a 331, and that pre-'62 318 Poly bellhousing fits right up! ~Jason
Those V800s were in a lot of cop cars, it seems... After the dual quads went away, the V800 retained it's name, and could be had on a single 4-bbl, and later pretty much exclusively a single 2-bbl. ~Jason
Hey Jason, Thanks for the help, and thanks to all of you. I think I am liking the 400cfm Carters. I will try and track some down. And to lonewolf. I am in windsor, ontario. Only about 45 mins from Livonia. I would be interested in the poly long block. If you could find out what youre brother wants for it I would appreciate it. Being an oddball myself, i like this motor. In a car I paid 1000 bucks for three years ago; this car took me through the mountains of BC regularly for a couple years and then one day I drove it to Detroit and averaged just under 25mpg. While i know we arent interested in fuel milage here, i think its amazing that I could get that milage with decent power in a 40 year old motor. There are motors offered nowdays that dont get that milage and dont even comperable hp and torque. And to all the poly haters.... arent all the new HEMIS essentially Polys? (last statement is open to arguement)
Same for the Ford Cleveland & the BBC. Carter used to make a matched set of 400s for DQ use, but all the 400s have been out of production for a long time.
No problem, man. And you'll be PLENTY happy with the 400CFM ones. As when taking cough medicine, only so much will stop the cough. Take too much, and it's not going to increase it's effectiveness, and there's that much more gone out of the bottle you could've saved for when you really needed it. Carb selection is kinda like that. Anytime you have a question, feel free to ask. And for the love of Pete, join the damn Yahoo Group - set it up to email you all the goings on once a day. You'll pick up a lot just reading the email with the new posts! ~Jason
Sorry to go off topic, but how much is a set of air cleaners worth? We found a pair of air cleaners and what looks like 1 original carb and 1 replacement in our shop. I can post pictures up later tonight.
A 318 Poly can be punched out to 400 cubic inches and make over 700 horses. I know plenty of folks that'll take that Poly 318 off your hands for free, bring those engines on!
Yes, they are NOT true Hemis, but they ARE more correctly a Poly-head engine. What I understand is that even thought the plug comes out of the valve covers, the combustion chamber is NOT a true Hemispherical shape.
I found the best combination bar none was the Weiand single 4bbl manifold and 600CFM holley with a LA dissy and orange box. Even with cam ( unknown specs) I had it would pull from low down to winding right off the speedo . Dual quads etc might look good but there is no real performance gain . The heads usually only need a really top valve job and make 100% sure the arms and shafts are perfect. You can lose valve timing with with worn pads and rocker bores. The hottest ignition to use is the best way to go,I used a EDIS set up on my last poly and the results were astounding. The best part about poly's is that everyone who owns a chev thinks they are no good and the result is that prices are way down.
You could try a pair of Carter AVS carbs. They worked pretty well on the LA engines in the late '60s and '70s. Bakaruda
I would love to see pics of your Monaco. When I was growing up my parents had a white/black '67 Monaco 2 dr hardtop. Had a fastback look to it. I loved that car.
Actually, in the geometric sense even the Chrysler motors are not hemis (hemi = half), a "real" hemi would have a radius equal to 1/2 the bore size, but instead they a smaller section of a larger radius shape. I would define a hemi as having a round chamber, with the valve stems in line with each other, but on opposite sides of the chamber (to separate them from twisted wedge, poly, Cleveland etc. where the valves are inclined in 2 axes).
Yeah...but try and find a Weiand intake for it! I've had a search on Ebay for Poly stuff for a couple years, for my Kustom 61 Pioneer, and haven't seen a Weiand go off for any reasonable prices in that whole time. (less than $600) And the 3 deuce intakes are even more!
I have a 3x2. Dude - there's some of the guys on the 318 Poly Yahoo Group that have a few. Put the word out over there! Hell, Gary P buys 'em when he finds 'em to see and help folks like us out. eBay prices are retarded. These go for $400 in the real world. Seriously - join the Yahoo Group! ~Jason
Like Abomination said, let's see em! Might even be able to help you figure out what they are for/or how much. Or, well...er.... um..... If'n they are some of the little 'football' air cleaners, I could always be inner-ested in em'.... ~MyDeSoto~
Shit... you sound like me when I "might be interested" in those 318 Poly Edelbrock finned aluminum valve covers someone on here needed "identified" a while back! LMAO! ~Jason
I put up some pics in my photobucket album: http://s591.photobucket.com/albums/ss352/griffsengines/Chrysler Air Cleaners/
(~Jason, shut up! LOL!!! It never fails, the attack of the Poly strikes again!) That's them alright! Ok, so now the million dollar question.... how much? Abomincation and I can both give you real world prices, as well as GreedBay prices, but...... aw shucks, guess I need to PM ya.... one on the way. Why does it always workout this way for me? Starts off innocent enough, then turns into something I really want.... sigh... ~MyDeSoto~
Yeah... um, those are worth $20 each. You should sell them to MyMyMyMy MyDeSoto. Hope you got your tax refund, man... shipping on those will kill you! LOL! ~Jason
