I drove this home without brakes,a frozen clutch and no lights over icy mountain-roads. Took the whole day and well into the night,-but we made it. It's a 1942 GMC 353 CCKW 6x6 with a 270 engine. It has been painted to look like something from a popular children TV-series here in Norway. I'm planning to paint it olive drab as it was ment to be. And the price was o.k. 290 USd. I also have another one that I got for free. Maybe it's not excactly HAMB-cars,-but I like them and I'm having fun.
Brakes? Brakes? We don't need no steenking brakes! Just put that bad boy in low range, low gear, and it'll idle at a slow walk! Pretty neat old truck.
Now THAT is definitely cool! Don't know where that one was built but my dad worked at the GMC plant in Pontiac MI for much of WWII (had a deferment - poor hearing), he overpacked tools, spare tires etc. in those military trucks at the end of the ***embly line before they got loaded on trains headed to ports, & shipped off to the war. Drive it over here to Michigan - I'll double your money, & don't worry 'bout the brakes not working
Picked one of those up in Homer Alaska to bring back over to Kodiak - It had a dual range hydro in it (it was early 50s GMC). Tell you what - low/low was LOOOOOW. Put in on the ferry, they hook it up (chain binder to welded loops on car deck. Took a bit over 24hrs going across the gulf. When they called all the car owners to go to the car deck, I got in, started it up and let it warm up. Came my turn to leave, the guy was waving me out - I told him that I didn't think anyone had taken the chain binders off - he just got pissed off and told me to MOVE IT. I put it in low/low and pulled about twenty feet of welded wrought-iron off that car deck before he figured out what was going on. It was with a great deal of chagrin that he clambered under that monster and 'turned me loose' to get off that boat. I bet he lied his *** off to whoever was in charge. As a sidenote, the GMC was all 24V, and all shielded ignition with a snorkel to boot. I believe it was either a 270 or a 302. dj
Here is a frontwiev. That winch can be handy someday. And a picture of the other one where it was parked for 10 years. The army auctioned off their whole fleet of WW2 vehichles from the 80's thru the 90's. There were Jeeps,Dodges,GMC's and even bigger rigs. Most of them went abroad, but some was sold to enthusiasts here. But now, many years after you can see a lot of them just rusting away in s****yards and forests.
So who has the bigger set??? You for driving on ice with no brakes or your friend who drove in front of you???????
