51 Chrysler 251 flathead six..

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by thrashingcows, Jan 13, 2009.

  1. I have a buddy who is looking for the carb spacing from bolt to bolt on a 1951 Chrysler 251 flat head six. The car is in transport right now so he can't get it himself but he had heard that he could run a ford 1bbl carb on the stock manifold but wanted to double check the measurements.

    Thanks for the help.

    BRIAN! Put the cat out

Thanks Bri. . .I'm the buddy.

I have abandoned the spacer and want to go to a dual 1 BBL intake. But Offy tells me the Dodge is not the same as the Chrysler engine. Is that true?

For anything relating to the flat-6 Mopar, call George Asche Sr, 814.354.2621.
If you are messing with a flat-6, keep this number handy!

I believe the carbs are the same; it's the manifolds that are different from the 23" Plymouth/Dodge engine to the longer 25" Chrysler/DeSoto engine. There are several people (olddaddy on the HAMB, for instance) who will split your intake and exhaust manifolds and let you run dual carbs and dual exhaust. That helps these flatheads a lot - with the right cam you can get up around 170 HP. Not much by today's standards, but with the low end torque they provide and the 'cool factor' of a hopped-up flathead, it's worth it to many people.

OK That sounds like a really great idea 73RR.

But I have another stupid question

The 23" and 25" everyone refers too, where do I get that dimension on the engine? Is thet length of the head? Block? Intake?

I haven't had a L Head since 1966. I've had my head in the sand since. LOL See my sig.

Jump over to p15 d24, quite a few folks over there with the long block MOPAR L 6's.

American car had 23.5 for Dodge and Plymouth, and 25 inch for Chrysler Desoto. Canadian made only used the 25, most accessory parts (except manifolds) are interchangable. Later long block have a full flow oilfilter, where as most 23 had a tin can byp*** deal.

Charlie Ackers, Old Daddy here and there does manifold splits and makes disc brake adapters.

Also quite a bit of lnowledge there regarding the semi automatic clunkomatic trans you are probably going to encounter.
