You may have already seen this new tool video from jay Leno,s garage, but for those who haven,t this thing can do amazing things! http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.shtml?vid=944641
the scanner is cool. The output is known as fast prototyping. I know a guy who does fast prototyping. There is a patch in the software for the DOT reflective triangles on tail light lenses. They can be made in red transparent material. We had some made about 8 years ago for a project...turned out way cool...just REAL expensive. If I remember correctly, I think the tail light lenses were a few hundred dollars. The cad drawings were a couple of hundred as well.
thats pretty damn impressive, kinda like rapid prototyping, which is very interesting to a designer like myself.
So you need to scan the old part to make a 3-D copy of it in plastic so you can take the plastic part to be cast and or machined? Why not just take the original part?
I for one am glad it got reposted. If it hadnt been I would have never seen it and how would one know to search for something like this? Excelent repost!
the search function is invaluable when you plan on making a new thread. cuts down on the instances of 50 threads about the same thing. if the OP wanted to make sure more people can see this information, they can bump the thread back up to the front page. AND...if you're glad it got reposted into a new thread, send Ryan $100 to cover the bandwith.
Or you can make the plastic part to ensure it works (i.e. fits) then send the scan file to a CNC machinist to have it made.
