What Trans adapters do they make for a Nailead? What Trans are best to use? I am looking at putting one in my next project but Im Not sure what Tranny to go with. Right now It has a 40 buick Trans and rear end hooked to it.
i know of two different adapters....one for chev autos and the other for early ford transmissions....
I am using the McLeod modular bellhousing to hook a 425 up to a Mopar A-body four speed using a custom input shaft. Luckily for me my best friend runs one of the best and biggest Mopar four speed shops in the country.
I concur. Even though it's killing the server right now, do a search on nailhead transmissions, you will find lots of talk about this stuff. In short. Dynaflows suck. Stock manual trans stuff is rare and expensive. Late (65-66) ST400 transmissions are the ones to use for auto. There are vintage adapters on eBay, go look. There are modern adapters for more modern transmissions and they're $500 and up.
Bendtsens Transmission Center Inc '53 to 66 Nailhead to Chev trans. As well as a wack of other kits. Start saving your pennies though, as they arn't cheap
I run a 1964 in my Forty, its a 425 (with dual fours)with the stock hydro, Turbo 400, this was a 2 Speed in 64, with 275 gears I run around 2400 at 80 mph. The 65 & 66 models have the switch-pitch converter, and the Turbo 400 is a 4-speed. This is the one I will use on my next project. Good luck
The T400 is not a 4 speed trans, it's a 3 speed. If you are refering to the switchpitch version this is still a 3 speed with a dual stall speed convertor. Frank
The Turbo 400 for 1964 (Buick called it the Super Turbine 400) is a three speed, but the selector was PRNDL, and not a switch pitch. For 1965 and 1966 the big cars had the switch pitch converter three speed T400 with PRNDD²L. The Skylark had the two speed Super Turbine 300 trans with switch pitch. Hope this helps, Frank
Thanks for straightening him out on that guys. The TH400 from a 65-66 is the hot setup. The adapters worry me. You can get a good core tranny for $150 and another couple hundred should rebuild it. I know Doc Fordehmeir (?spelling) had an adapter that he was working on. Ironhunter (ray) would know more about it.
Frohmeders adapter is available through Phoenix transmissions. I'm pretty sure that is only for the 364's and early 401's. Shouldn't be a problem to get that engine plate and have a machine shop make up the correct hub adapter for the later 401-425's.
Mel, I think I know where there might be a couple of 400 nailhead trannies to be had if you want to check it out.
