I am looking at this column http://www.speedwaymotors.com/STEEL-STEERING-COLUMN,9145.html

My factory '49 column has long been gone and the S10 one i was going to use looks like azz in the car.

Any input you guys and gals may provide would be very helpful.

I do not need a fancy $500+ ididit column. just a simple one to get the steering wheel to turn the front end as I tell it to.

    Thanks in advance,

we just put one in the Willys. Other than some issues with the retension pin on the wheel hub, it is a great value

Works good I used one on my last project. If you intend on using a horn on the wheel hub you will have to be creative. Also the OD is 1-3/4 I fabbed a drop with a 2 piece shaft collar

  10. patronize Limeworks, Speedway ripped off their idea anyway. Steve and the guys at Limeworks support the HAMB.

Or, build one yourself, there is less than $50 in materials in that thing!

Don't have any good pics of it, but I made one using stainless exhaust tubing and an old '65 impala column. The lower bearing is a direct slide in, and requires 2 bolts to retain it in the tube. For the top bushing, I turned up a piece of nylon that had a lip on it, slid it in, and the wheel helps hold it all together. Total cost was under $30!

I'll second that - Limeworks. Limey Steve is a great guy with a super product and he is an alliance vendor - support your local HAMB!

Speedway column 'Made in Elsewhwere' like much of their ripped off ideas? Buy a quality product, Made in U.S.A.

I certainly do not have extra money laying around, but i will definately help an alliance vendor out if I can. From the looks of the product, being made here and supporting a HAMBer, it looks like i will spend the extra cash and buy from Limeworks when i need it.

If ya'll haven't check their website out, then do so.

Thanks Tman and Weasel for the info..i should of check it out first

Thanks for the support guys, I had S****way ask to be dealers for our columns, they got the dealer program & then made their version & sold it at our dealer price , a nice way to do business !! I am not bothered I do the best parts I can at a small profit so I can help out as many as possible . They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ;), just check out all the others they all make "simple columns" now , life goes on .

    Keep on Hot Rodding.

Unfortunately Steve yours is a common tale. Sp**dway stinks in my book - a lot of their products are absolute junk. I always try and reverse the process and find out who supplies Sp**dway or whose product they ripped off, and then buy from the originator.

  19. Here's a dumb question-- if this is a street car, what do you use for a turn signal??

Check out our web site we have clamp on cool turn signal switches .

  21. I made mine with a couple inexpensive bearings, a chunk of SS tubing out of a Dairy and the shaft that came with my box. I did buy a QR for it from our local Speed Shop.

Yep, totally cool. Funny thing about those bearings, some guys tell me they can't swing a dead cat without hitting them in a store, yet other guys say they can't find them. IF you can't find them, the steel shop here gets $3 each for them. Add even shipping and the cost of a short tube and bar, you are STILL under $20,,,,,, cause I'm a cheap mutha like that :D

Decided to build my own column after reading the post by Chopintops.

    So here it goes.

    Parts costs:
    1 @ 1 3/4" x 36" pipe = $11.00
    1 @ 3/4" x 5' solid rod = $12.36
    2 @ 1/3/4" OD x 3/4" ID bearings = $20.41
    1 @ 3" x 1/4" thick round = $1.20
1 flamming river DD coupler (free from a buddy)

    Total spent so far = $44.97 :D

I know chopintops did it for less, but I went with 1 3/4" to fit the drop mount on the '49 dash so this meant ordering the correct size bearings (www.motionindustries.com). I did find 1.5" bearing for $2.50 at a local metal supply house, so this can be done much cheaper!

I will start to build this tonight and post pictures as it goes.

    Cheers,

  26. Works great, if you don't need a horn button in the center of the wheel.

  27. Hell, I bought a '63 Riviera column at a you-pull-it yard not that long ago for $12. I got a '65-66 GM fullsize tilt the same place a few months later. Any GM up to '68 can be made to work in the older Chevys - and as a bonus you can make the stock wheel work if you want, it fits the shaft. I'd scout around local before I ordered something.
