I am looking at my chevy engine trying to figure out whether I have a 235 and what year it was manufactured. The head number on it is 3835913 and there is also a B2 913 241 579. On the distrubutor side in fairly large numbers is con 4 L 38. I have not been able to find any additional numbers near the dizzy. I've read that there are supposed to be some, but for the life of me I can't find it. When I look from the top down at the dizzy, on the left side, there's a logical place where the numbers could be. I cleaned it off and its flat with no numbers. With what I have found thus far, any ***istance would be appreciated. By the way, I did ck inliners.com before I posted this request. I didn't really find the info I was looking for on that site. Thanks.
235 side cover stops at the head surface, 216 goes up to the valve cover. 235 (and 216) dipper has a three-bolt tin bit just above the pan rail, behind the exhaust pipe. '55 and newer 235's and 261's have four bolt valve covers, earlier engines have two long studs and nuts.
4 L 38 makes no sense, since no month has 38 days. However, the 913 head started in 1954, and should have the four perimeter screws holding the valve cover down.
What is the block casting number? it should be right below the dist. kinda toward the front. Here is a good line for stovebolt cast numbers http://www.1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt-engine/casting-numbers.html SlickT
Yes, 3835913 is 54 - 55 head. The block casting number on a 235 is low on the block in front of the distributor just above the pan flange. Small numbers. Where is that other long number located? If the distributor flat has no number it may be a replacement engine. I know factory replacement 216 engines came unstamped.
CON 4 means conveyer 4 L 3 8 means December 3rd 1958 or December 3rd, 1948 But since the head number is a mid 50s 235, it would be 1958 for the block, you have a 1959 model year engine
there should be a number cast above the starter or behind the generator (I forget). It's hard to see wherever it is. There is a lot of detailed info on identifying 216-235-261 motors on the inliners.org site
Two items to look at to get it down pat. First, just behind the distributor is a flat horizontally machined surface with a number and secondly just ahead of the distributor is the casting number on the block surface. If you have the motor mounts still on the engine you may not be able to see the casting number, but the other number should be visible, here is an example from one of mine: 00837775T56Z. This is the 83777th engine produced at Tonawanda in 1956 as a standard 235. If you provide that number we can break it down for ya.
I think he said there is no number stamped on it, so we're probably gonna have to settle for just the date code...
