i looked myself but couldnt find anything.are you sure thers not a six digit number on there somwhere?i think what you posted is the prefix to the casting number
I remember seeing a post about these numbers its sapost to tell you when the block was cast but I'm not sure if these are it?
i was tryin to figure out the same thing last week but everyone told me who cares cuz these engines are not worth much.if you figure it out let me know.i would like to know the exact year of my engine and where it was made too
The code on the pad by the distributor is what you need ... F is Flint, T is Tonawanda on the prefix. There's a suffix which will tell you what it came in originally. If it's a '41-'49 truck 235, it'll have a 3 digit prefix.
235 Chevy casting number is located just forward of the distributor at the base of the block. That number will tell you the year range for your block.
The casting numbers you found. CON 3= Conveyor 3 A285= Jan 28th, 19?5. you need to find numbers on right side of motor just behind the distributor, there is also a head casting number infront of the carb. and another set of numbers on the block jus to the lower left of the fuel pump. these would be other good ID's. hope that helps I also used inliners.com
Here is the number stamped on the block next to the distributor 0276I49F55Z. And here is the number that was cast into the head 3836848.
That's a 1955 motor. If it has a big round hole( 3" or so for a water pump) in the front of the block it is a p***enger car motor. If it dosen't then it is a 55' 1st series truck motor.
But it it uses the big spark plugs I think there 15/16 when was the last year for those. And here is the number off the motor in my 1946 3/4 ton chevy the number is 0827963F54Y and CON 3 G64 and head number 3835913.
0276149F55Z = 0276149 is the build order, F means built in Flint, 55 is 1955, and Z means regular engine 0827963F54Y = 0827963 build order, Flint, 1954, Y means Powerglide equipped it was off CONveyor 3 on July(G) 6, 1954 Here is a great source for decoding these numbers. It is way better than Inliners IMHO - http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm
