Back in the early sixties I had a 1936 Plymouth coupe that ran a 292 Y-Block, beefed up Mrec-O-Matic, 4-11 posi rear end. A fun and fast car.

1st car was a '31 Ford Roadster that my dad surprised me with when I turned 14! It started off a coupe that someone had cut the roof off of, had a 4cyl. Pinto motor, red w/ Cragar's & black diamond pleat interior...MAN, was I in heaven!! No license yet so I would come home everyday from school and drive it around the back yard. We dumped the 4 cylinder and put in a 289...sadly enough we ended up selling it after that and I never finished getting it going again. The frame was "home made" and I don't mean with the quality that my fellow HAMBer's have, I mean crudely, home made. Never ever went right when working on it because nothing ever fit right. Love to have it back now (I know much more now and many more folks now who could help!!) Anyway, sold it and bought the 1st of 3 VW Bugs I have owned. Took advantage of it's "old car" looks and built a sweet ride out of it. Ahhh, good times, good times!

Wasn't my first exactly. But the two that I wished I would have kept. 1938 chevy coupe, and a 1935 stude 3 window with suicide doors. DAMN

  11. In 1962 my 3 closest friends and I combined our coins to buy a 40 Pontiac coupe.
It was an all black coupe, MINT!
The engine was seized from lack of oil but that was fine by us........we were gonna build us our first hot rod!
Down at Aberjona Junk Yard we scored a nice 303" Olds V8 engine from a wrecked '52 sedan plus we purchased a 1950 Olds complete 3 speed stick set up.
I bought a few cans of engine degreaser and 3 cans of bright red engine enamel and a new set of clear red spark plug wires and we were ready to go.
We used the high school's auto shop to do all of our machining and fabricating and moved it around town with a tow chain to different garages and back yards trying to figure out the rest of the puzzle.
After about a year it was running (barely).
We had now become high school, unwashed, dateless, teenage hoodlum, hot rodders.
Women hated us, cops despised us, our cloths and body reeked of stale gasoline and old grease and Brylcreem and Lucky Strikes were our drug of choice.
That '40 Pontiac was held together with true backyard engineering, friendship and about $300 total cash outlay.
We knew we were cool even if nobody else knew it.
My pals and I were rat rodders then before there was a name for it!
The car disappeared by the mid 60's but our friendships with all the characters involved still goes on.

My first hot rod build was a 48 Dodge Club Coupe . Bought the 48 Dodge for $ 75.00 ( Rust Bucket ) . Got a free donor car for the Drivetrain. ( 68 Ford LTD Country Squire Wagon ) . Used the Front Clip , 390 Engine , FMX trans and 9" rear . It came out OK , for a 19 year old. ( in 1988 ) .

My high school buddy always reminds me.... No matter what it looks like , you will always be driving a Station Wagon . :D

  15. This 55 Chevy. I bought it in 1972 when I was 15 for $50.00. It had no motor or trans, missing the front seat and a busted rear window. Hell, it didn't even have a steering wheel !! Looking back, I probably paid too much for it!!:D

This is what it looked like back around 1976...... I still own it.

well ima young guy im only 20 right now but back to the story. a few years back when i first got in to wrenching my high school mechanic shop teacher "the old man' as we called him came to me and said."i got a 27 "T" roadster body and ill sell it to ya for 100 bucks" i did back flips and asked him why so cheap? he said "because some times at swap meets if you wanna by 1 thing you have to buy a dozen" and in this specific case he had to buy 3 "T" bodies just so he could get 1 with both passenger and driver side doors.
so my FIRST car and FIRST hotrod was a original steel 27 "T" roadster

Very cool story! Guess that C-note was payment for storage or maybe to recoop some cash from all that grub you were consuming? So what happened to the Impala?

A '29 Model A pickup semi-complete and painted the most bilious Purple - everywhere. The 21-stud flathead had a leaking waterpump that sprayed me - no windshield of course - every time I stood on it. That was late 1954.

In 1973 I bought a '38 Ford Standard Coupe with a 327, 3 speed and a 10 bolt. Finally traded it for a big block '67 Camaro in 2002. Dumb move on my part.

First car was a '50 Chevy two door Town Sedan. I paid $50.00 for the two-toned wonder in 1977. Over the course of the years, it was 216/3 on-the-tree, 283/powerglide/open driveline (rear end came from a '57 Chevy), 283/3 on-the-floor, 327/3 on-the-floor. I couldn't afford the Speedway kit that would have saved SO much aggravation, but I did have access to a pile of scrap iron, a torch, a press and a welder, so I made my own mounts. Paint went from the Pea-green bottom/dark green (OK it was mostly red primer) top to Ford Grabber Blue to black with flames. I sold the car in '87 for $200 without a motor in it.

In 1969 (just before turning 16) I bought a stock 1929 Ford Model A coupe (for $100) from a guy moving to Alaska to homestead some land. After I got my license I drove it from northern Michigan to Pennsylvania and spent the summer working for my grandfather on his farm. After the chores were done for the day we removed the engine from his retired 1947 Ford school bus (the one I rode to school on the first day of first grade) and transplanted it in the A. We were aided by an small publication put out by Hot Rod magazine showing the transplant. At the end of the summer I drove it back to Michigan. It was my ride for the last two years of high school and the first two years of college. I still have a soft spot for Av8's

My 33 Cabriolet... I bought a body in 1973 and it has looked the same since 91... so when it turns 80 I'll have had it 40 years...
