I have a 51 chevy sports coupe with MII kit.. What steering column are you all running with simular set ups?
I have a Ididit in my one car, but I am getting Steve at Limeworks to make the one for the chopped Coupe, Hell I think I am going put a Limeworks in my Sedan also the Ididit is not so cool!!!! even though its chrome!!!
Hi I am using the OEM 51 column in my 51..I got a kit which is called " Save a column "..You cut the column tube and the stering shaft off the OEM gear box..In this kit there is a bearing which goes inside the tube and holds the shaft..the shaft is then connected to a u-joint...From that point you connect u-joints,shafts etc to the rack..You will have to get a column/tube clamp/bracket to secure the tube to the floor..the OEM wheel is still used..I attached photos the large u-joint shown was used for mock up and later was changed to a smaller one...Miller
I def want a floor shift and im not against using the stock column.. id perfer it really where do i find the "save a column" kit? and id like a push ****on start hidden but its not a must have. any thing that will look good and work well with the MII kit
stock column looks best to me .... save a column kit= a bearing and a clamp from local hardware store lol
Back to the steering column question: I used a tilt column from a 1978 Impala in my '53 because I wanted the tilt and I had the donor car. I don't like the way it looks. It's too fat, and it just looks wrong in an otherwise '50s interior. My bad. I'm building a '51 coupe right now and I have another late-model tilt column but I WON'T be using it. I'm planning to use an older (smaller diameter) GM column from the mid-60s if I can find one, and if not I'll use the stock '51 column and modify it to work and to have built-in self-canceling turn signals.
I'm using a column I bought from CPP on Ebay. Was a chrome tilt column with shifter for $225. I think it was an overstock Item as in the magazines they sell the same for $400 plus.
I went with a chrome Ididit tilt shift on the column. I have a rag joint and one knuckle bettween the column and rack.so to pull the column I undo it all and pull it back into the car about 3 inches and its all mine.
We used the factory column on my wifes 54. Sawed it off and found a bearing to keep the shaft centered. The shaft had to be sized to fit the double d joint. I think there's a write up on www.50chevy.com . I think CPP is the company that sells the kit if you don't want to do any legwork chasing down a bearing. We also went with a floor shifter.
I talked to Walton fabrication just 2 weeks ago and the have a complete kit that they have put together, it usually comes with the tilt column but i went with " the cl***ic" from ididit. the tilt kit is 664$ and the cl***ic kit is 592.50$. the kit comes with the column, 2 joints, 1 DD shaft, the floor mount and the dash mount. IMO i think this kit is great for people like me who have never done this kind of application and dont want to mess up. here's the link to the rod n custom article. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/0806rc_bolt_in_steering_column_swap/index.html Ian
I did get a column kit from RB'S but I was told these guys are not in business any more so I was told..It appears that someone was making the kit for them?!!.However try this go to www.webrodder.com and get on the forum area and ask Chiefweasel for any info he may have about the maker of the kit..As far as the push ****on start I am using the OEM ign. on/off switch and the push ****on to start....over 8 years no problems....Miller
