Any good post of links out there to cutting/shorten and welding front axles.I have a 49 Hillman that I`m making a g***er out of and I have a number of front axles out of 50`s Chevys and Ford Trucks. They are too wide and I want to shorten one. This has been talked about and done before and I`m after ideas on jigs and the process to do such a job. Thanks
search turned this up in .01 seconds: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168603&highlight=shortening+front+axle ooops, youve seen that! Carry on.........
Since you only need one, I would make a sliding jig to maintain the Camber. Locate off the Kingpin holes on the stock axle to make the fixture. Cut the axle down, slide the fixture together. Double check everything before and after tack welding. Welded properly, no problems.
You got to be kidding!! in these parts?? Can`t find parts to a 78 Camaro let alone a Anglia. I live in the rust belt. Thanks for the link Born Loser.
Bolt the axle down to a large piece of I beam using the spring pad/U-bolt holes. You'll be able to washer/shim the pads to retain the present axle alignment without adding stress. Redrill one side of the I-beam to match the distance you want the spring pads...stagger cut the axle for welding (aligning off the mid-point) and rebolt the axle to the new location using the same shims that came off each hole.(From the previous test fit of the uncut axle.) The cut should line up perfectly...or at least to a 16th of an inch! LoL
I make my own using just the spindles. Last one i made is for my HE-EP project. It is 37 inches king pin to king pin and uses 1956 Ford 1/2 spindles and kng pins. It is actualy a lot of fun making them. Some step by step under Hemi Jeep Altered post. I also made the one for my Sr Dragster. Using tubing is much lighter. You could use the whole knuckle and weld it to the tubing. My post shows how to align it as well. It weighs a lot less then the stock ones and fits perfect. Don
