If it's from '71 it should be a 200 or 250. The 250 is taller, deck height is 9.469 vs 7.808 for the 200. The 250 has the same bellhousing as small block V8, the 200 is the same as the 144/170 sixes. Most 200's have the starter above the pan rail, 250 is below, like the V8's.

240 or 300 would be my guess but...
    nice score!

The 240/300 have the oil filter and distributor behind the fuel pump. I'd say it's the smaller six.

Also filter comes straight out from block [my '71 van had a 90 degree adapter for clearance] on the 240/300.

By using the adapter to point the filter straight down in any application you can fully prime the filter when changing to minimize "dry start up clatter" and premature wear on internal parts.

If your replacing the head gasket, spend the time to have the head checked out if your planning to reuse it. I had an engine with that milkshake look, thought it was just the gasket and ended up having 3 different cracks in the head. BTW that is a sweet looking car..

Thanks for the help guys. There were old cars in the hanger. There was a couple of old nash, a couple 58 apaches a dodge business coupe, and my favorite a splitwindow vw bus. I am thinking about going to get the bus in a few weekends. There is a soft spot in my heart for a splitwindow bus.

Congradulations on the find. Those ford sixs run great with a little work. Clifford products sells allot of speed equipment. The "log" style intake manifold is the biggest pain. Very nice find.

You don't have to be a crazy old bastard to have a hangar full of 'stuff', but it seems to help.
