fuck, i went awfully close to losing three of my best mates... we chose a bad weekend to go to the holiday house! they were already up there and had to get evacuated. i was on my way there and had no idea the extent of the fires, came over the hill and saw yarra glen absolutely surrounded by fire. there's now over 100 dead and with the weather the way it is now (ie, we haven't had decent rain in well over 5 years) i can't see the habitat recovering.
Sorry Carps, but the Ozrodders thread said it was confirmed, so I presumed it was correct. My bad... Any news on Tina and the kids yet? Glen.
I can't believe how lucky I am. This whole shit fight started just out my back door, and we are untouched. Just got word that two cousins in Kinglake and one in Flowerdale have lost the lot, but they're alive. Heard another great story about a friend in Kinglake. He rushed home from Melbourne, broke into his neighbours shed, hotwired his dozer and flattened everything he could near his house in front of the fire, then went to save his brother's house. I can just see him up there, there would have been no fucking about. Saved both houses.
It happens especially in situations like this. I didn't see it but Sam was interviewed by TV news-crew this mornin, very emotional I'm sure but he lives in hope they turn up safe and well somewhere.
It's a problem we live with here and I've seen some of the worst in my lifetime, but this mongrel is worse than all of them combined.
Hi Guys, Got woken up from a call from my Dad this morning - one of our close mates (he served in the army with dad) lost his son, his son's girlfriend and her brother. Agonising to get this kind of call. Danny
I live south of Brisbane in a rural area that may be similar to those that have been devistated by these fires. I am looking out a window at beautiful bush land and surrounding homes, as many that are now homeless would have done only a few days ago. !000 Km north we have possibly the most severe floods in recorded history while in our southern states these fires. The destruction of Homes and personal belongings, is nothing to the tragic loss of lives. Homes and belongings can be replaced. I have lived through bush fires in the 60's, but this weekends fires have made me look closer at what we must always be prepared for. Fire moves that quick and shows almost no mercy on those in its path. But as in many previous times, where nature (and those that light fires for some unknown reasons) have devistated large areas and communities. A persentage of these people will start over from scratch, and rebuild there homes and lives to the best of there abilities. Disasters of this kind are experienced the world over, but when it is as close as this it is more painful I could not try and imagine what they are going through, and hope that we never see this extent of damage and personal loss and pain again
Thoughts and Prayers from your friends in Texas. Been watching on the news what you have been having to experience. We have bouts with these types or wildfires that take out thousands of acres and entire towns. We know what you are going through. Take care, K
I cannot understand how some fuck can get his jollies about setting these types of fires. I pray not only for all the people affected by this, and those that passed, but for the fucks that did set fires to be caught. Don't shoot the bastards. Burn them alive, like the 108 already found. Hope you all make it through.
My heart goes out to those over there who have lost loved one's and property. A grand applause for the effort the services are doing in trying to save what and who they can. A total tragic loss and it leaves me looking for words. I can not begin to think the amount of damage that has been done apart from totally catastrophic. It has been very dry here, in the country side. The grass is yellow/brown in places and god forbid a loose spark as we are surrounded by trees....
This is terrible, Im hate that I am all the way up here and cant help. The mis-information is bad too, I was told that my parents were evacuated (There close to Carps) but now I hear they were not. My uncle is a station commander (I think thats what he is called?) over near Narry Warren/Endeavor hills, he has been gone for three days as to has two of my cousins fighting these fires. I have volunteered to head down for St Johns but they dont need us Medical assets as bad. Managed to live through Ash Wednesday and a number of fires since, so I understand what people are experiencing. I hope all goes well for my family and all else down there. My thoughts go out to the surviving familys of they who perished. Doc.
Word is it will break 230. Have heard some incredible stories of heroism from this one and the images in todays news are nothing but mind blowingly unbelievable, if hell exists as it's been depicted to us, this is what it looks like.
i just got news that my uncle's house was one of two houses left standing in his street in flowerdale, not levelled as he had resigned himself to. the second house belonged to my mum when she lived up there. lost a friend in the churchill fire- gippsland, he had gone up to a friends farm to try and save the cars and workshop.
A smaller fire was being fought yesterday in NSW and the police have arrested a 30 year old suspect. In Vic. Christine Nixon the outgoing commisioner has said that investigators can tell immediately if a fire was deliberately lit. No doubt we will all hear more of how this started in the comming months.
If it turns out the fires were lit intentionally and they catch the guy responsible, they should torch him at the stake if he likes fire so much. 131 and counting.
This is bloody terrible, never seen anything like it with so many people dead. Number is over 130 now and that could get over 200. Heres some pix stollen from ozrodders-
More perspective on the big one. Imagine this coming at you at around 80mp/h. which way do you run? It's around 50 miles across.
To all our Ozzy Cobbers, we hope this is all over very soon, our thoughts and prayers (I'm not normally a religous man) are with you all. I was inside a workshop fire years ago (nothing like what you are experiencing I know) so can only imagine the terror you guys are going through.
Caught the end of the report but it sounds like the fire near here was deliberately lit!!!!! F@@kers should be burned at the stake......slowly. Totally speechless at the devastation. Sorry to hear that Stu....
My heart goes out to everyone down there. As for the retards who start fires, would any threat of punishment stop them? By definition, they are deranged. I would however, kill them.
My deepest condolences stu, I feel empty inside, This disaster will echo in the history books for a long long time. Has any body heard from; Kustom linez low squire Aussiefluke59 Aushotrods whytetrash Psychobilly boi rustybones all those still in the war zone Please stay safe!
More perspective: According to a report in one of today's newspapers the power of a wildfire or as we know it bushfire is measured as KW/KM and anything above 4000kw.km is lethal to firefighters, so that is their limit. The Kilmore/Kinglake fire on Saturday was measured at 20,000kw/km which explains why it simply obliterated everything in it's path.
