6 volt or 12 volt 1954 f100

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldtimer, Feb 8, 2009.

  1. ok i've been all over google and i've found that '56 was the first year of 12v for the f100 (i also have a '56 shop manual). i took apart a spare cluster i have (53-55) and all the gauges are embossed with 12v on the cardboard on the back?. did they have some 12v in '55 or something.

could have been a late production 55, or someone converted it later

all my 55 or older were all 6's

  4. i should have said 12v printed on the back. on the front of the gauge it says "K-S", then a part number and on the back the cardboard is embossed with "K-S" so i think it's original paper back. i'll check the one's in the truck now, the truck is 12v (now) and i want to get the original gauges working. i bought some 12v converted one's but the faces are plastic (they look like the originals though).

Some of the big trucks & custom cabs 53-55 were factory 12V. We have a 55 F-750 that was 12V from original.

I just looked in 48-55 Big Job parts catalog and it says Ford used 12 volt in big trucks from 52 onwards. I checked starter, coil and generator.

Also, any cowl and chassis trucks that Ford buil in 56 such as for a school bus or other body type used the 53 to 55 style guage cluster with 12 voly gauges.

IIRC, it's really a matter of the resistor block that feeds the gauges. But don't quote me on that....mine's 6v.

  9. hmm, so they used the f100 gauges in the cab/chassis trucks. sounds like they might be a little harder to find nos then using the aftermarket ones. maybe i'll see if i can test these.

    Thanks.
