How long are they? I need about 27 and 29.5. I think the truck ones were only out to 31 or so weren't they? They have to cut 4.5" off so it might work for the short side... Please let me know how long they are and we can go from there! THanks! Where in IL are you?

Just cut a 8 inch down. A very reputable axle shop also said they needed at least 1"of splines. inside the gears. It also depends on the general purpose, but you really need to have plenty of splines in the pumpkin. I had to buy a set of axles for my application, because they could not be cut down.

    Good luck

  3. If they are 28 spline axles... there usually isn't enough meat to cut them down.

if You find a pair of 70's F-100 axles (get the brakes too) they are 31 spline... they have enough meat to cut them down to 28 spline axles. Currie used to charge $75 an axle... but the last pair I had done was 5 years ago.

The F-100 axles will have the same 5 on 5 1/2" pattern that your Bronco axles have.

  4. quick check - about 33 measured from the large flange.
I think these are the common 2-1/2 offset axles. (some used shorter offsets)

There are some shorter that I didn't measure.

Would these be long enough to help?

custom all the way, or have early bronco big bearing axles redrilled for the 4.5" pattern. Typically all Ford cars had 28 splines except maybe the hi performance mustangs. All trucks had the 5x5.5" pattern. Even if a station wagon had a 31 spline axle, it would be pretty wide. Just the fact you have Explorer brakes going on, you'd be limited to custom, IMO. Unless you go with an 8.8 axle shaft, and get proper bearings to hold it. But I'd think custom is easiest for time, and money well spent. my $.02

My Moser axles showed up Friday. Total was $426 including studs and retaining plates. Only way to get Chevy pattern on a 9" without welding and redrilling stud holes in truck flanges, worrying about trying to have originals resplined which wasn't even an option in my case. Between sand blasting, housing ends, bearings, & seals, the rear end is so far the biggest expense in the car. Using '65 Chevy truck rear brakes. Backing plates welded and redrilled for New Ford (Torino) housing ends. Check out how beefy they are up to the splines.

33 would definitely be good for the short one, but it would be close on the long axle. I am definitely interested. Let me know if you have more accurate measurements... Do you have any that are close to my 29.5 or 27?

I hear both sides of the argument that resplined axles are no good or that they're fine... I don't know if it's worth it or not.

I'm starting a new thread about axle lengths...
