Sorry. I just feel like coming to this board and damning any of the big 3 is kind of a slap in the face. but then again, I am an ***hole who still beleives in feeding my neighbors dog when she is out of town, and still think Apple Pie is better than fortune cookies.

    so, **** me, I guess.

He could have just cracked a cylinder wall, which is common with thrown rods. Any good machine shop can sleeve a block for $60 or so. I've had it done myself. Then again you can get a complete 305 for $50, so yeah... boat anchor. :D

To the Toyota guy...yeah, they run a long time. I had a Toyota pickup about 20 years ago that had 234K on the clock when I traded it in. I also had a GMC pickup with a 292 six banger in it that had 417K on it with no rebuild when a guy broad sided me and totaled the truck. So there ya go.

Update. Got the engine mounted and snuggled up to the trans tonight (what a nightmare). Unfortunately, the exhaust manifolds won't work. They're hitting the motor mounts, so I have to go back to my block huggers and dimple them where they were too close. Should be able to get everything ****oned up and light the fire tomorrow. I can't wait to see what this baby will do with my 4.10:1 rear end under that short little truck. Should roast the skins pretty good :D

I saw some stuff in a can at Pep Boys that said it would rebuild an old motor while you drive. I'd get some of that. $6.00 and you're done.

  11. So **** me too, I guess,' cuz my friend's cat is staying at my house while they are out of town. If Goldchainer$$$ (!?!) is so proud of his rice burner maybe he's on the wrong site. JMHO Mike

    I should also mention-
    Go Dart Go!
looks good. I see You chose the route of "I kersploded an engine! probably better to replace it than replace the entire truck".

    schweet.

Thanks, Lux. No way I'm replacing the truck just because of a disobedient end cap and rod. I have too many hours on this ugly old truck to cash in now. When life gives you ****, make a **** sandwich! I figure it's fate's way of telling me I needed more horsepower. :D

I actually WATCHED a Chev rod-toss happen once... I helped a kid put together a 350 from junk in my ba*****t, and unfortunately I set him up with a click-type torque wrench, he failed to understand the setting directions, and since he had already put the pan on I did not check the rod torque. Poor thing was probably finger tight.
At first start up, the engine started a slight knock which took about 10 seconds to become a major knock...I stuck my head under the hood just in time for the final WHAM and actually saw the rod shoulder punch through the pan! Whole thing happened at fast idle...rod just dis***embled.

It's hard to kill those sixes...I had a couple of 'em in '57 Chevys years ago, tried my damndest to kill one so I could put in a new 283"...never did die.

Back when i was going in circles a couple buddies and I were standing on the back straight infield when a 6 cyl modified blew the side of the block out. A piston and rod ***embly came rolling up and landed right at our feet, my pal grabbed a red rag out of his back pocket, picked it up and took it over to the guys pit and said, "think you lost this". I thought the driver was gonna smack him with it for a second.

  18. I have a 327 that looks surprisingly like that. #1 rod went through the side of the block. Funny thing was the car was sitting a little lopsided. I had to pry out a chunk of cast iron from the block that was jammed under the A-arm for the car to sit level again!

(And my Ford has 253K on the clock and is my daily driver)

  19. Looks like you got the usefulness out of that 305. I hate those damn 305s!

This Top Gear segment is nothing but British silliness. It has nothing to do with Toyota vs Chevy durability .
