Problem Seeing Traffic Lights

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by High Class Rat, Feb 11, 2009.

  1. I have a 1931 Model A Coupe with a sun visor, and has been chopped and channelled. When I am stopped at a red light, I sometimes have trouble seeing the traffic light. From what I understand, there use to be a device that mounted on the dash that reflected up so the light could be seen. Does anybody know if it worked and if anyone is still selling a similiar device?

It worked, it was known as a traffic light viewer...I don't know if anyone is repopping them. They used to be plentiful, but I'd suspect they are hard to find now.

It's available from almost every rod parts outlet, SPeedway etc. Now in plastic.
Early 50s Pontiacs had them as stock equipment mounted on top of the dash in front of the driver.

Yes, it was an optional piece for the Model A's.
I have seen them and I have been told they work...........somewhat, I'm sure the MAC's or Bratton's probably has them, and I've even seen them on Ebay.

Do you have holes in your visor????????????

  9. Takes a little getting use to but the avatar '47 Chev has one, works great. Kinda wild to see this dash mounted " plastic optical clamshell" and the p***engers are really suprised to see it go from red to green! Time to go!!

Nice truck. What are those seats? Are they seat backs? And the console? I am looking for some now.

    thanks for sharing.

The originals were metal with a prism lens. They mounted to the dash with a jointed shaft for adjustment. The Fulton brand was a sought after accessory and pricey to go with their Fulton add on sunvisers of the 40s-50s.

The suction cups are cheap and work but mine kept falling off at the most inopportune time and would roll under the gas pedal while driving. Mine was more of a pest than a help. I thought about a dab of super glue but I was a little leery of that. I don't do much down town driving so it's probably under the seat somewhere.:D

Yes, traffic lite viewer is a good idea. I even put one on my Chev HHR, which although an '07, has a low windshield. Couldn't see the traffic lites if I was real close under one, now no problem.

My Model A has a 5" chop. I had one in the A, it worked OK. All you really see is red, green or yellow dot, which is all you are concerned with I guess. In So. Call there are so many signals at intersections I don't use it anymore. Low lid and visor do make you bend down to see overhead signals if that is all there is at an intersection.

The new plastic ones with the suction cups are pretty worthless. They fall off frequently and are really not much more than a conversation piece.

When I was a kid my uncle had one in his coupe-told me it was to rest his dentures on.
He'd pop 'em out and lay 'em on that prism....I bet he laughed like hell afterwards?

Agreed. I could never get the ones with suction cups to stay put.

The viewers work good and don't even require wires or batteries.
The other option is to just wait for the guy behind you to honk when the light turns green. That is your signal the light has changed, flip him off and burn the tires off...
