I need some help getting the bottom of the decklid and the panel below lined up. I have the top and side gaps looking pretty good, and the deck lid tack welded in place. I just can't get the bottom to look right to me. I am using aftermarket parts (Howells)so that might be the problem. I have very little experience with a model a. I did several searches and just can't find the pictures I'm looking for. I need to see what the gap between the decklid and the lower panel look like, also what does the decklid sit on at the bottom? Just the latch? I'll shoot some pics of my problem tommorow. I have to head to work soon. Thanks in advance for your help. Tim

Sorry, mine's a rumble seat and those latch at the top, but are also a ****** to get adjusted so they look right at the tailpanel mating line.

I had to cut mine down the middle and overlap the two pieces making a seam. I then made wire tack welds down the seam. The overlap was around 1/4 inch. Yea, I wasn't too happy, but now the trunk lid fits perfect. If I were to do it over, I would have cut the bottom, but I had already tack welded that in place when I noticed the lid didn't fit.

Just got home from work and snapped a couple quick photos. Here is the problem if I get the gap good in the center the ends are off, if I get the ends good the center has a huge gap. Is there supposed to be a slight arc in both pieces or are they both supposed to be straight? I'm sure I can rework one or the other just not sure which one yet?

ibcalaveras that pic is great thanks any more would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Tim

  6. The trunklid has a bit of a crown.

Dunno if the angle side pics will help, but note the panel under the trunklid has a subtle curve to it.

Thanks for the pics guys. I spent a couple hours tinkering with it this afternoon. I got it much closer. Looks as if when Howells built the decklid the bottom lip was bent over at an arc not sure how that happened but for $500 I'm not real happy about it. I used the hammer and dolly and got it straight across but the break line is still crooked. I got it good enough to continue fitting the patch panels. I'm not sure if I'll cut the lip off later and rework or just live with it. No one will notice but me, but it'll probably drive me nuts. Anyway thanks again.

When trying to align parts like this, make sure that the opening and the part are square; do a couple of cross measurements, one of the part and the other of the opening. This should tell you a lot, either could be twisted. Sit the lid down of the floor, do all of the corners touch the floor; the lid is more likely to be square (or not twisted), the opening might not be.

  10. Model A lids are supposed to be arched a little from side to side.

I remember being told that I had to fit the body to the trunk, not the trunk to the body, when I bought a new decklid.
