I thought the Raiders were started in 1960 in the old AFL. Most of the wide whites were just fat offensive linemen.

Oh wait this is a car site...

    ...did you mean Raders?

Skinny whites are the only way to go.

  6. There weren't any cars in the 40s and 50s with Radirs (nee Raders), let alone wide whites; I think they first appeared around 1961 or 62. The phenomenon of wide whites and Radirs seems to have first appeared in New Jersey around 1997.

Did'nt the Fentons that look a bit like Radirs come out in 63 or 64?

Radirs are a mid/late 60's bleeding into the early 70's thing...but who cares, I love them.

I also like the Torq Thrusts a ton also.

Never was a big Cragar S/S guy though...just me.

I thought they started showing up on cars with wide whites more in the early 90's? Was it really that late in the 90's?

Yep. The Originals ARE Raders, aluminum center, chrome rim, single spoke.

RadIr is the new, knockoff, totally aluminum, Tri-rib.

I've just got find my Rader Wheels Catalog I ordered out a Rod & Custom Magazine in the 60s. It pictures their wheel line and the NEW finned lakes pipe "covers" that bolt on under the rocker panels as a heat shield.

I thought the "Radir" name came from a mispronounciation of Rader 'cause of some NewEngland accent or something.

The original raders were aluminum center with a chrome rim riveted to it. The contrast of the weathered aluminum center against the chrome rim is what makes the look for me. My favorite hot rod wheel of all time. These wheels started in the 1960's. The chrome was very prone to rust so not too many good unrestored raders left. I plan to run a set on my hot rod. one more vote for Radirs and skinny whites, save the wide whites and Radirs for 60's show rods and bubbletops.

More VW content, but here is a more recent shot of my Notchback on Raders. Just need to finish my bodywork so I can finish up the red base and start taping up for some Kandy panels.
