I am going to buy some tires to have ground down to wide white walls at a local tire shop. Can anybody tell me what brand radial tires they used? The wider the whites the better. Thanks

I'd advise against this, but if youre gonna do it anyway get whatever has the thickest sidewalls.

I worked at a recapper.I hope you know all tires do not have white in them. You proberly got to find ones that have some kind of whitewall to begin with. I do not know which ones as i hate whitewalls and have since 1959.

the tires have to be either an already skinny white or raised white letters and you only have to grind like a 64th of an inch.

If you're buying radials to make wide whites, why not just buy wide whitewall radials? Seems like a waste of money to be cheap, save your bucks and get the right stuff...

Its not the same thing smart ass. Its half as good. Anytime you start cutting rubber off a tire, you alter the strength of the sidewall.

And, I see where several people gave the time to offer good advice here.

And, why did you answer your own question in post #4. Are you two people?

Im not really fighting either side, but if youve looked at the material that gets ground...im not really sure that it does take strength away...or much at all. It doesnt take much to get it to white either.

Ive seen some that were cut real deep. Looked like the side walls might have been purty thin. You may not have to go that deep, but Ive seen them cut deep.

If done correctly there should be no safety concern. Point is do it correctly.
ONLY take as much as needed for the whitewall to show.
    PRACTICE on junk tires.
If someone else is going to do it for you I wouldn't trust them unless they have done it for their own car.
You are on the computer DO RESEARCH.
Check load index and speed ratings before selecting a tire.
    Use your tires within reason.
Checking your scrub line is very important no matter what tires you run.
In my experience I have found lettered tires to have seam lines in the white layer.
If you are not routinely inspecting you vehicle or having someone reputable do it for you all saftey issues should not be a problem.
Don't drill your I-beam axle it will make it weaker.
Don't drive cars with mechanical brakes.
Don't talk on your cell phone while doing anything it's dangerous.
    Don't be a fuking sally.
    Don't bitch.
Do whatever you fukin want just be aware and safe.

I've done thin whites on the front of mine & raised letters on the rear, the raised letters seemed to be a little wider.
Also your not taking enough off to worry about a thin sidewall. But it does make a mess so i suggest doing it outside.LOL

It's one thing to have a serious blowout and chalk it up to an act of God.
It's another to have one and have people know you took a grinder to the side of your tire and drove 80 mph.
It's your car, just don't take any kids or dogs riding with you. Just my opinion.

the strength of a tire is in the belts under the rubber. I have never heard of a failure due to cutting the sidewalls and people have been doing it for a long time.

I have however heard of 3 expen$ive "factory" whitewalls exploding way before thier time on my buddys car. (not all at once)

  20. Lots of wide white radials are available, grinding the sidewalls can be dangerous. The sidewalls build up heat when you drive, if your buying tires anyway - be safe.

Swap meets are a good place to find new or used radial or bias ply WWW tires...they're not the same as shaved tires, they look much different...and shaved tires look like shit up close compared to a smooth factory WWW...go donate plasma a few times a week and get the dough for the real thing...

I have been juggling this idea ever since I purchased my 63 caddy, which came with almost new 1 inch white wall radials. I would love for them to be 3+ but don't want to mess up the tire I have now, so I have yet to do it. Truthfully I will probably buy some new ones before I grind what I have. Pops always said if you're going to do it, do it right.

  23. If the tire shop has the machine they probably have done them before and may be able to recommend which tires to use. Lots of guys here on the HAMB have reported success with shaved whitewalls. Do some searching through old posts (yeah it is time consuming) and you will find lots of info of a positive nature, along with tire brands that have worked well.
I spoke with a "tire shaver" that did lots of work for new car dealers fixing mismatches on trade ins. I'm talking big Buick dealer in major city. I don't think they'd risk the liability if there was any chance the tire would be compromised.

  26. Here's a sidewall failure that was on a nearly new tire. Wires came right out of the side of the tire and then it blew out ..
