...just for the heck of it, I typed in "scrap drive" (same name as our show) into my search engine and found this cool photo...hope this link works. http://www.npl.lib.va.us/absoluteig...&categoryid=79&text=&imageid=382&box=&shownew= ....too bad those coupes were scrap'd, but it was for a good cause.
Remember, if those cars and all that other stuff, hadn't been fed into the scrap drives we might just be speaking our English with a distinct German accent, OR all our rare old stuff would be just common as dirt. Either way WE would be the losers.
More to that story than the scrap drive. The lady pushing the car has to be with the circus, because ladies did not go around wearing short tutu costumes especially in a wrecking yard. The car in the front is new. I think she and the elephant belong to the circus. Mystery.
...in the link, on the top of the photo it says " clown & elephant team up to collect cars for the scrap drive" dated Oct 13th, 1942. ...note the big shoes on the clown behind the car being towed by the elephant.
Just a thought, looks like every thing in that picture shows the Honda, toyota , ect. ect. of the day.Who is screaming about all of the 70's ,80's & 90's iron that is going to scrap today. It was a moment in history when we , as a nation, we needed all the scrap that be had. It would be nice to have all that junk to use today. Just remember, we may have been in a different world with out it. ............Jack
I'm surprised no one has identified the '33 Plymouth or Dodge the pachyderm is pulling. I was just about 1 month old that October 13th.
Only New Jersey could have a circus that tough. I'll bet they beat the crap out of you if you asked for popcorn.
Kinda weird that a car not even 10yrs old would be scrapped! Most people of that generation, having lived through the Great Depression, would have patched those cars up and kept them running for decades.
Didn't say it wasn't for a good cause, but just weird that a car not even 10yrs old would be headed for the scrap yard. People didn't have tons of money to throw around back in those days and an 8 or 9yr old car wasn't something a person would just get rid of.
I saw a news short that showed a guy drive up in a 28-9 Ford Roadster. He hopped out. Then a crane grabbed it with some huge jaws and threw it in a giant pile.
Think about this, we are lucky to have the remainder that WASN'T crushed for the war effort! ( alot survived inspite of it.)
