My wife just ordered me a bunch of car parts for my B-day. (she's awsome)She ordered me a 90volt sending unit thats supposed to be used with after market gas gauge. My question is: for now i planned on running the stock gauges but switching to after market (maybe Stewart warner) gauges later. Will the stock fuel gauge work at all with this sending unit? If not have to run without fuel gauge for now.

  2. the sending unit has to match the fuel gauge...there are different ohms range . Stewart Warner uses a sender that is 240 ohms empty and 33 ohms full

when you say 90 volts , do you mean 90 ohms? i don't know what car you have , but `65 and up GM cars use a sender that is 0 ohms empty and 90 ohms full. as you can see different ohms and they work backwards from each other

Its a 52 chevy styeline. I ment ohm not volts. In the book they have a 30ohm and 90ohm she ordered the 90 because i'll be switching to after market eventually and only wanted to buy a sending unit once.

  4. GM cars BEFORE 1965 use a sender that is 0 ohms empty and 30 ohms full

  5. Well, my 2 cents? Get that aftermarket gauge now, and mount it under the dash for now with that new sender. That's how I'm running my 38 Chevy. A friend gave me a 67 GTO gauge (90 Ohm), and I just mounted it with a Zip-tie under the dash. Works perfect. When I do my instruments, I'll get a 90 Ohm gauge in that set

Get the correct matching stuff or you will end up with what I have. the 0-90 GM unit connected to a 59 EDSEL which needs something like 77 to 12 ohms in the reverse direction. I built a resistor network to bring the numbers into the correct range, but the gauge goes backwards. SO I have "E" for 'Enough' and "F" for 'your F-ed' or "fill it up" . Works for me!

Ha! thats funny. Long as it works. Guess I might have to invest in my gauges now. Id hate to buy just a fuel gauge and when the time comes to get the rest they where discontinued. Or maybe i'll just search the junk yards for a gauge to save a few bucks till i can get the ones i want.

  8. Check my post (#5). If your wife got you a 90 Ohm sender, I'm pretty sure ALL GM stuff from the mid 60's thru the 70's are that. Get one, mnt. it somewhere easy and go
