Just came back from looking at some real nice 37 Ford slantback rear fenders. They are painted but look so good they could be NOS. The fenders currently on my 37 are okay, been patched and painted but not perfect. The guy wants a tall buck for the fenders and I got him down a bit. We're in the same car club so he's holding them for me for a couple of days. I can afford them if I want to put off other purchases for my car a little while. You don't see them like this very often. Should I or shouldn't I? I have a good buddy that p***ed on a set of NOS front fenders for his 58 Chevy about 20 years ago at Carlisle. He still has the 58 and still kicks himself for not buying them. Anybody else been in this situation and latter regretted not buying? I bet there are tons of good stories. I need a couple of good ones to push me to just do it. Thanks.
It's the opposite for me. I buy parts thinking I'll use them in the future. When I don't and sell the car, I give the parts away with the car. Don't have the room to stock pile car parts for a car I don't have anymore.
I would buy them if they are better than what'cha got.....Then sell yours on ebay or craigslist or even here to recover some of your cost.......Just my 2cents.......Good luck
Im not a fan of buying **** I don't need, but it might be a good Idea to get em. You never know if/when you might need them. And if im not mistaken those arent the easiest fenders to find. are they? Keep a receipt of how much you paid for them too in case you ever need to show the insurance company.
Yes I have, In fact I could tell You one of those "stories" right now, but won´t bore You with that. No point in crying for ships already sailed. If You feel it´s a reasonable price, the stuff is something You want and can swing it without selling Your kids off to the traveling circus I say go for it.
A guy in my club has the same car as yours and he had a tire come loose on him last year and destroyed a rear fender. He bought the nicest pair he could find to replace them but took a while to locate, he spent most of the season sitting.
It comes down to your personal objective with your car. I wouldn't go crazy with spending money on trying to achieve virgin sheetmetal, but if you are starting with really rusted junk it probably makes sense. It sounds like you are not starting off with junk.
Two stories: A friend sold a NOS '37 Coupe rear fender at Hershey last year for $1,200. ..............About 25 years ago I was looking at a pair of early take off 28-29 Ford front fenders for $600.00, my wife was with me. I thought they were just a bit overpriced at the time. "Buy them! I don't want to listen to you complaining forever that you didn't was her reply.
Buy them, they aren't making them anymore. If you p*** you'll someday be telling stories just like those already posted. Frank
Well, unless you REALLY need them, I'd spend the money on what you DO need. They are old, but not really that rare. My buddy Vic bought a 37 notchback a couple years back, with no fenders. WIthin a year, he bought 2 NOS ones, and the other 2 were MINT. And that's not easy, considering the notchback has different rears than the other models.
Except for the year, that looks like my stash. I buy good sheet metal for my cars whenever it is available/affordable. A crash could have you sidelined a long time while you look for parts, and it's kind of like an umbrella-as long as you have it you won't need it.
