My brother who works at a local wrecking yard called me and said they got 2 59 elkys in and the owner was going to crush them. I want to look first and see whats salvagable , anything important to look for . I know tail lights and most of the trim, other parts? going to try and save something from them if I can , he said they were really rusty
Back window, tailgate and trim around the bed and tailgate are hard to find, I would definitely get those. The license plate bracket is integrated into the trim on the tailgate and is hard to find too.
Glass, air cleaner, mirrors, bumpers, guages, dash trim, glove box door, ash tray, knobs, steering wheel, doorhandles, etc. Think of things that you can't just purchase anymore or the aftermarket is poor quality chinese B.S.-Weeks
a NON rusted out roof is worth havin around. ive seen them rusted around the stainless trim where they needed a new roof.
He said only one had a motor and it was a 283 he thought. I will be there shortley to look and try and get some pics
1/4 panel spears, door chrome and i want them! also look for radio delete plates.even the dashes will sell!.keep me in mind.bruce
Doors and tailgates are also Elky-specific...the formed metal piece that anchors the top of the door panel to the door is worth grabbing... Dash pod, hood hinges, and any sheet metal is worth grabbing. They'd have to be pretty far gone & rusty to not make it worth grabbing the whole cars and parting them out...IMHO BRT
Define rusty? There's a ton of resellable parts on those, enough that if they're just going to crush them it would be worth buying the whole cars and if they're truly unsalvagable, stripping them bare. You can sell a dash out of one depending on how complete it is that at the current scrap price both dashes should pretty well cover your investment.
No 59 Elcam. should be crushed! If the owner doesnt want to do anything else with besides crush them he's just simply being lazy. Do all of us a favor and have your bro get those cars out of there if possible!!
just got back and they are beyond rusty, alot of trim between the 2, only good side trim may be a front fender spear. only one has a tail gate. I got some pics on my phone will try and load them to see if its worth it. Im getting the dashes and head light bezels . Not sure what else
Everything on a '59 El Camino is "1959 El Camino-specific." Everything is worth saving, especially to someone trying to build theirs. Why not just tell people where they're at so they can be bought complete?
outside of brazil indiana at griffins auto salvage. I would love to be able to help some one out. Im not trying to hoard parts or anything like that. Hell I will give you directions .
heres one pic I need to load the rest . gotta run to town . will load them later. this is the best of the 2 there
The doors are the same as two door sedan doors, the window frame however is a specific piece. The tailgate can also be modified from any 59 wagon. Same with taillights and bezels. That's nit picking though, as much as possible should be saved.
How are the frames? Every one of those I've messed with that's been bad has been bad in the rear section from about the spring pockets on back. Sometimes they rot under the cowl if they sit in the mud though.
i see some pretty good stuff(ok bad eyes) try to get em both if you can and part em. bed trim is hard to come by,lots of stuff still on there. get em both drag em home if you can. i'm sure they are gone ,but how about the rear valance panels ,under the bumper? i needs them also.
I bought one from the hamber Fedsled and shipped it home from WA. It was a piece of shit, rolling with no motor, trans or case, and very rusty. Fedsled even took the dash on his own project... I ended up to sell it for good money but maybe one day I'll get another one for myself. So go and get them asap! --mika
You guys are crazy if you think anything from the seat cushion down is going to be save-able on that car. When the front bumper has rust-through and the ass is in the dirt, it's not a good sign. Take off whatever trim you can that isn't bent/dented to hell. Then fire up the torch, cut the roof and door tops off from below the windows, and cut the dash out through the cowl. Save the hood. Crush the rest.
What I see that's got value- Dashboards, the actual structures not the gauges/trim Upper quarters & fins & taillight surrounds If somebody walked around them thinking like a customizer, what might look good grafted onto another car.......bet a guy could make a $500+ for an afternoon of cutting. good luck
I could use the trim pieces on the hood. Hows the hood? And mabey a headlite bezel or two.... And the passenger half of the front bumper if its shiny and not rotted. (Mine's half crusty)
