My dad built me some exhaust cutouts at work and before I weld them on I was wondering if they have to be mounted a certain distance from the headers?

The closer to the manifold/header the more back pressure your going to most likely loose, and the closer the louder. It really all depends on your application and what your intent for the cutouts are..

You can bolt 'em right to the header flange if you want. It all depends on how loud you want it.

Depends on your application. The idea of them is to be able to get to them easily to uncap your exhaust. The closer to the header you can get them the louder it'll be.

to make them function the best, mark the headers and intermediate pipes with a heat crayon. Where the crayon stops melting is where you want the cut out to be.
