I know this might be a little off topic since its not a traditional motor but its still a motor so i figure i'd share. So i've had this 287 short block for my pickup and the guy that had it before me overheated it so bad that it warped the heads beyond no return and the busted two pistons. So i got to work taking it apart and took out the pistons droped in new pistons with new rings got new heads and the whole nine yards. After i go to start it up it ran fine but my oil presure was way down so evreyone was advising me to change my pump. I take half the motor apart again to change out the pump and when i start it up again my pressure was better but there was this weird kncking coming from inside my block and my pressure was still going down. I finally went to my buddies machine shop and he told me that it has to be the crank bearings. So i take the motor apart and swaped out the cranks shaft, threw in a set of bearings, new gaskets and all the good stuff and around 7'o clock last night I finally fired up the beast and it ran like a dream. I still need some wheel bearings and hopefully today i'll be taking it down the road. I'll have some pictures later. I've rebuilt motors before under the supervision of experienced people but this is the first one I did by myself so I'm so freaking proud, that I just had to share it with you guys!!
Dude, I'm fifty-one years old and I've NEVER completely rebuilt an engine....and you're , what 16? Props to you, bud.
I'm 28 and I've blown up all the V8's I've ever cracked open, not to mention the ones I never put back together...hmmm, there might be a trend there...nahhh, i gotta go tear apart a pontiac motor and put a blower on it...later...
Hey, you should be proud of yourself! Now, where's the pics? I know you took pictures because I sure as hell would have.
I'll have some more later,, for now i got to run and pick up a new fan clutch and a set of wheel bearings
Congrats it must have gave you some warm fuzzy feelings! I would be so nervous firing up an engine I built for the first time....... I have always wanted to tear in to an engine and build one. 42 and still not gone there yet.....maybe someday!
Thats way cool just think about all your freinds and thier cars and trucks. YOU built your not store bought. Now how about coming to Ga and help me build some of mine you should see my shop its a mess good luck and be safe Tim
Excellent! The experience of doing this at 16 will be good for you for life, even if you don't do this for a living. I was 14 when I first built an engine and I am amazed at how much it taught me to figure things out. Building any engine involves a large amount of problem solving. Apply the lessons learned to any problem. Everything is all just "stuff". Someone built it at some point. Now.. since you have raised the bar on your learning... carry on!
Building an engine is one of those things you HAVE to do to be a real hot rodder! Sorry for the fellas that haven't done it, but you're all just DABBLING until you do it.
Nothing like starting an engine for the first time after you rebuild it! Almost like being Dr. Frankenstein....creating a monster!! Great job, maybe you've found an occupation....I bet you'll be rebuilding many more!
when i first started it I had no headers and i wanted to leave it like that because it sounded soo sweet but my mom was complaining that it was too loud so i had to put them on, and plus its freaking illegal
Sounds go to me lets go raceing Did you get to drive it? Hows it drive and ride let us know. Wheres the rest of the pics don't stop now that you got us interested
That doesn't matter, you'll remember the sound the rest of your life!! You can replay it any time you want. Like others said way to go, that's an BIG acomplishment.
