just curious to what all kinds of transmissions everyone has used both manual and autos and how well they worked out. primarily for sbf but what all different types of 4 or 5 speeds worked great and took some abuse?

Anything made by Chrysler has been good to me, except for one 904 automatic which failed the day I bought the car....

All my GM made automatics seem to fail prematurely, although I'm pretty impressed by the amount of abuse my S-10 T-5 stick shift has taken.... ;)

Toploader 4 spd is the greatest production 4 spd ever made period.I should have broke the one i had many times and it never gave it up.Shifted like silk in town and would drop in the next gear on the strip at 6500 every time with my foot on the floor.I broke rearends ,clutches ,etc , but the trans was bullet proof ...

I like the T-5 in my '63 Ranchero, shifts smooth as silk. The B/W Super T-10 in my Galaxie is awesome also.

Can't go wrong with a C4 for a sbf . Small, light and will take a ton of power . C6 is good too just really big ,eat up a lot of cabin space .

I see Toploaders occasionally on Craigslist for $300 -$500 .Sometimes with a shifter and Bell Housing to boot.T-10's arent as sought after as the Super T-10's.I think the T-10's are the early versions and are part aluminum and cast iron. The supers are all aluminum case and i think they came in early to mid 70's Vettes and Camaros. Not near as strong as Toploaders though ,from what i have heard.I am i bit bias ,cuz i was real impressed with the Toploader i had in my Falcon ...

I had a C4 in my roadster (and one in my coupe, too) that worked like a champ for a long time (20+ years) with essentially zero drama. When the motors got replaced, both cars got AOD transmissions. I really like the combination of short gears around town, and tall gears on the highway.

c4 transmissions are good strong boxes that are very easy to work on and are easy to come by. Performance parts are available too. From past experiences they are a good trans for the money and for SBF's.

Chrysler transmissions are pretty solid, as are turbo hydramatics of all series. My favorite is the old dual range hydramatic from the early 50's, virtually bomb proof and were used in WWII tanks. Strong, but heavy as hell.

Cant beat the gear ratio of a small block Toploader either with that 2.78 low gear.My 56 Chevy has a Big Block Muncie and i'd trade it in a second for a Toploader and adapter kit from Ford to Chevy .If i run across a Toploader cheap ,i shoot you a pm ,if your intersted ...

I just sold a ford AOD today! Oh well you're too far away anyway.I bought it for my '40 and changed my mind due to size.It has a C4 now and would have had to cut frame for aod .If I were just now building the car, I would use an aod so I could run a lower gear . If you get one , make note of the year . After a certain year( 1990 I think ) they require a computer .

I put an FMX in the 50 MERC I built several years ago. Best trans I ever had, because it worked super for years and, best of all, it was a freebe.

    It's easy for me to remember , 72 mph is @2700 rpm . That's with a 3.5:1 gear and a 31" tall tire .

:)If that post war coupe is what you're building, you can fit a 31" tire .Bottom line, You'll be happy with either a C4 or an AOD or a C6 if you have room .Then there are your T5's with od if you want a stick . We could go on and on but I'm going to bed !

Top loader Ford, or Chrysler A833 4 speeds will handle full throttle powershifts no problem.
