That might be because MAS makes them 'alexes' for Speedway.:D

I'll stick my neck out and say that I have never understood why Henry Ford chose to go transverse leaf and cross steer - see my signature. Knowing Henry's reputation it must be because he thought he could save a dime. I think that it is a clusterfuck of a suspension system, which unnecessarily overcomplicates a simple issue, to which there is a simple solution. The factory parallel leafs/semi elliptic on my Willys work very nicely than you - simple and easy. Why would anyone voluntarily want to go to a transverse leaf straight axle retrofit on an IFS car?

I have to agree with weasel here. DO NOT run the transverse set up. stick to paralell leaf springs, if you must make this conversion. Guy I know Gene Web put transverse under his 55 with hairpins, hit the brakes and folded them. His hairpins were mild steel chrome plated. His repair was to install stainless steel hairpins with gussets. still a fucked up set up in my opinion.

Not to high jack the thread, but my fiance has a '51 F1 with discs on her I beam axle. I've been thinking of tearing it out and replacing it with an IFS set up. Would the original axle be a decent donor for a gasser project? It's not truly a "straight" axle. It does curve a bit, but I thought it might be usable for that. Any thoughts? It may help the OP answer a question or two.

A lot of people confuse 'straight axle' with solid axle. Many gassers used a solid axle with a slight drop - Econolines have a drop, as do stock 1933-1942 Willys, but have been used many times. It's really a question of how much you want your car's nose to hemmorhage.

Probably because a big part of the reason for putting an axle under the car was for weight savings on the front. A couple of 2X4 stubs weigh quite a bit less than a stock front frame with the big crossmember in it.
And while we're on the subject, why use a stock I beam when a tube axle is lighter? Yea, I know the answer. But if you're going to the trouble of cutting you're car in half, why not spend a little more and make it as light as possible?

Depends on the car, but most of the time the frame had a big crossmember. Not only was it heavy, but most of the time rode very close to the staight axle. Also the front of most frames, were not strong enough to handel having the springs mounted to them. I have seen a few built that way, but they look kinda strange.

With my build I got a second frame and cut it off in front of the body mounts and built a new front section out of 2x4 sq tube
