Lots more room was our reason. 5'10" and 260lbs don't leave a lot of room in a stock dimensioned A roadster body, steel or gl***

  3. Here's one that I always see at shows around Minneapolis/St.Paul area... owner is a HAMB'er, sorry I can't remember the name.

I was just thinking of this car. Coupsters are cool in my book. Plenty of people built them in the day. Look up Seret here on the HAMB. He has a super rad 26-7 coupe turned roadster. I love that car!!!

  5. For the guy in southern California who HATES coupsters---Okay, thats your right to hate them. Why don't we all get real roadsters, or fibergl*** roadsters??? Well, the unfortunate reality is that the farther north you go from southern California, the fewer roadsters were sold. Us poor jerks that live where there is ice and snow a goodly portion of the year never bought that many roadsters in the twenties and thirties.---We bought steel topped cars with roll up windows and heaters. And now, for anybody wanting to build on a budget, thats what is most readily available and consequently least expensive. Yes, a person could buy a gl*** roadster body for $3000 to $7000, but hey---If ya can get a real steel coupe with a rotted top for free, or close to it, to build a "coupster" from then that $3000 to $7000 saved can damn near build a running car. (Or at least a good chunk of it). And you're right---its not going to fool anybody into thinking its a REAL roadster.--But---does anybody really care?? The hobby is about building unique, early style cars and enjoying them. "Traditional" has a lot of different faces.----Brian

    Amen to your post, Brian.

However, some do care. But they need good a kick it pants with a reality boot.
If we all worried about being perfect we would be restoring and not rodding!
I'm hoping to build up a T coupster simply because I have parts of a body that someone cut the top off of at some point.
Now.. will I be able to run it as often as the hater in Ca.? Nope. But I'll have fun.
What other reason is there for doing this stuff????

I have a 30-31 coupe that I found that someone had already cut the roof off. I am going to try to make a roadster out of it. I have all the 31 roadster W/S stuff and have to rework the cowl to make it work. Plus I am 6'2" and the extra room might be nice. It will take a lot of work to make it into something but I will try and I don't care if someone thinks its stupid. If I like it when its done, thats all that counts! It was a pile when I got it anyway, got the pics to prove it:D:D

Gigantor, I gave what was left of mine away. I still have the door tops but I think they are sedan door tops. Longer then coupes. I guess you could say I have a coupster with a TON of room.

I think i have to change my opinion on coupsters a little... you have to use what you can get to do what you want, especially if its a 28/29! haha because the prices of a real 28 roadster has gone up soo much...

I beg to differ. How 'bout a roadster built from a Tudor sedan? Not a Model A, but if ya wanna go *******, a 300 dollar sedan beats a 30K roadster body all to hell! :D Just my opinion, you understand, 'cause I'm building it.

I have a 29 Business Coupe that I'm trying to sell as a real nice untouched original car. If it doesn't sell it could become a coupster. Cut the door post off, chop the windshield, build a removable carson style top, build it hi-boy style on a deuce frame and hit the road.
It wouldn't be a roadster, but the next best thing with crank up windows and a removable top.

I'll have to second hotrodnailhead's comments. I've drove his coupster last summmer and had a thrill. I'm trying to put my 29 coupster together as soon as I can. You can't beat driving without a top when its the middle of summer.....I say build it and be tasteful about it.

I have a coupe body with quarters chopped up because someone wanted a pickup instead. I found this body with the top cut off and the doors welded shut because someone wanted a roadster. I was going to junk this body and build the coupe. Then I figgured what the hell:D.

Here is a link to more pictures. Sorry but my camera ****s. http://s592.photobucket.com/albums/tt5/Jdyce01/
and a link to a thread I started.

Not the car I would build if I had more $$$ but it should be fun when I get it done.

If the cash ferry comes by I have a 392 hemi I would like to run in it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292239
I just can't get myself to spend the money for parts. I hate to loose my job in this ******* economy and have all my money in the hemi.

    at a car show

If you decide to buy the car, then IT's your car, do what you want & screw what everyone says.
It's already been proven that they can be built & be built to look nice.
Also who's buying the car & parts for this build, you are...joe

I don't know for sure, but several famous early customs were convertibles with two door hardtops grafted on. Am I thinking of "The Polynesian" ?

Thought I would show my 29 sport coupe under going a rebuild by J&M Rodworks in Glenwood Md. The photo's with the black paint scheme show how it looked when purchased. Removable carson top, about a four inch chop on the windshield stanchions. Body was loose on the 32 frame. Very. Doors flew open on curves. I would get home and shake the body back into place. My kinda car. Always exciting.

Now the car will not have a roof, ever. The body has undergone a full bondo flossing and s****e (by Beatrice the Bondo Hygienist). Inch thick. One choice was put to in new coupe wheel arches, (turkey foot beads) to match the existing. Intending to keep the coupe lineage present. The body was lengthened two inches behind the door jam. The K-member was mounted flush to the bottom of the frame rails, allowing the interior floor to be channeled inside the framerails. Outcome. Lots of interior room, depth and length. Sitting in the car, instead on top of it. Lots more details and fabrication hits. More to follow.

Even though it seems like more of a custom thing, What about a removable carson top? I wonder if it was done in the 40's-50's I dont think I have ever seen any pictures of one..

  30. The guys *****in about a coupester not being a "real" roadster are *****es:D And they prolly run alternators on their "traditional" hot rods:D

Heres a few shots of my "roadster with room" I'm over 6'1" / 225lbs and I'd rather push a "real" roadster then drive one on a long trip....

    Now I wasn't trying to build a roadster out of a coupe, I built a coupe without a roof:D
As you can see in this pic I was really low and comfy in the car.
Build what you want and drive the frickin thing....
