Anybody ever use a universal fuel sender and guage?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by countrysedanman, Feb 18, 2009.

  1. Im thinking about the setup napa has, it will work in a shallow tank like the wag has. Are these semi accurate and reliable? Would I be better off just replacing my sender with a repo and repairing the factory gauge to work? Any thoughts

if you use the gauge from napa, also, it will work fine.... with mine, it reads backwards using the original gauge. depends on the ohms required for your original gauge and if it is positive ground or neg. ground. 12 volts, or 6 volts.

I can tell you that the NAPA gauge and sending units are solid, we used to use them on equipment and they held up under really rough conditions. I would wonder though, would the dash look better with the factory unit restored? Sometimes those newer style gauges look kinda funky in an older vehicle, just my opinion.

  4. One reason I was thinking of using the napa one is the guage will fit in my panel, it has 4 holes and I only have 3 in it now, plus the price is good. I ran a wire for the sender circuit when I put the harness in so it should be good, thanks for the info.

I installed a universal fuel gauge and sender in my 1934 Graham (455 Pontiac) and it also works backwards. All I have to remember is that "E" means "Enough" and "F" means "Fumes".

I have a universal unit in my Plymouth, and it works fine. Just be sure to read the instructions well, and make sure you measure and re-measure before you cut the float arm, and the mounting bracket, you only get one chance.

They are as accurate as the tank is proportioned. If you have a basically cubicle tank, great! If it looks like a drug influenced sculpture, you'll just have to get used to what the readings really mean, same as any other.

I put a really inexpensive universal and sender in a '50 Ford about 10 years ago and it worked fine for the year or so after that when I still owned the car. If I remember correctly I just epoxy glued the sender to the bigger outer ring from the factory Ford unit.
