ok so i live in orange, i have a 53 belair with the 235/powerglide in it and its running really off. i turn it on and it wont idle nice and wont stay on for more then a min or will turn off when i put it in gear. i need someone to come out to my house and help me fix this prob. i really am lost when it comes to these motors. 17146543716 thanks art im planning on working on it all weekend
check the spark advance canister on the distributor if it's busted internally.**** on the hose and see if mechanism moves.if not....go buy one.
1. check the vacuum advance line for leaks, 2. chevk for burned up points, 3. check for loose intake bolts, leaks, 4. I recommend you get a langdon's adapter and put on a holley weber carb, mine ran so much nicer and they are easy to run 2 or 3 carbs since they have built in progressive linkage.
what have you done to it so far?? have you changed the dist cap, rotor, plugs, wires, points, condensor?? not familar with those carbs but does it have an electric or manuel choke, check that the choke ****erfly isnt sticking open or closed. how close is your fuel line to your exhaust or other hot things, any fuel filters in the carb or anything you dont know about, maybe blow some compressed air into the fuel line that runs from the fuel pump to your tank how is your engine wiring?? is the motor/trans grounded properly?? just a few questions that come to mind....good luck
I have had this issue before. It was always fuel related. Check fuel filter, Carb float. Take carb off and clean well. **** from the gas tank can mess up the carb easily. The other suggestions of checking ignition related items is good advice as well.
ok gas tank was cleaned out new fuel lines, motor was completly rebuilt form the ground up, dis. looks new still and wires too, carb is new also(prev. owner did all this work and the car only has about 600 miles on it since then but ive had it for almost a year now) only thing i can see that isnt new is the vacuum adv unit and it does feel like theirs a leak coming from the arm that makes the dis. trun. will that really make the car do that? also it sounds like its missing and it idles kinda high and the idle screw is backed out all the way.
Is the choke working right? the plate inside the top of the carb should be closed when it's not running, and the engine is cold. When it starts up, the plate should open up a little bit, and when you rev the engine it should open more, and when it's hot it should stay open all the way. What does it do?
Well I don't have the choke hooked up its just blocked off and its getting fuel I can see it down the carb
vacuum leak. that is why you have to screw the idle all the way out to compensate. use a propane torch, not lit, and just let it blow gas out all along every place a leak can be. you'll find them all.
