Driving/towing from Phoenix through NM, TX, OK and Kansas and back...what to do?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by applekrate, Feb 19, 2009.

  1. Hi out there,
I'm making a road trip across the above mentioned states with my primerd '66 GTO.
I just towed one of my '61 Catalina Safaris through the mountains of Az to St Johns. Then I just delivered a motor to a guy in Albuquerque. Now headed further east on I-40.
Wanted to ask- what to do? who to meet? etc

So far, I plan to visit the WWII sub USS Batfish in Muskogee and thinking about the car show in Tulsa. I have an old Tempest to pick up in Kansas I bought last year then head back to the Phoenix area.

    any suggestions appreciated.
    I'll be posting pics too.

    thanks,

    Steve Barcak

I make that trip every year to go to the hamb drags. Last year we stopped at Starbirds place in Afton Oklahoma, it was pretty cool. Get some good directions before you go, its not easy find.
Its not car related but the aquarium in Tulsa is pretty nice too.

I have an Eclipse GPS/DVD/MP3 super gizmo but those roads are not on the map. Its more like go past the big elm tree, turn right at the red barn, cross the railroad tracks and turn left at the feed store. :D

Shamrock TX has a neat bunch of building's to check out.

  9. Thanks for the posts guys.. It has been a good trip so far. I really like the 700r4 overdrive and lock up conv in the GTO.

Here are pics between Superior and Globe, Az. This is a VERY nice road to drive on. Not the best to tow on. Well worth driving this road. I've been on it hundreds of times and never tire of it. Lots of history and very, very pretty.
Went through Superior, Globe, Show Low and on to St Johns where I have my new place. Dropped off the sation wagon, then pulled the motor and strapped it to the dolley. Then headed up to I-40. Got into Albuquerque around 8pm. Delivered the motor then drove 'til about 4am, slept east of Amarillo. I enjoyed the night drive. Now getting near Ok city.
Thinking about the car show mentioned and a few other things.
    It's quite windy here.

Final destination is Independence, Ks to pick up a wrecked '67 Tempest post coupe I bought last year on ebay.

    Want to go here-

If your in OKC and hungry for a good burger, find a Johnnies. Don't forget onion rings. Damn good burgers. If you're in/near the K.C. area, then it's BBQ time.

Sounds like the flint hills(yea-hills. In kansas. Right). Got to be the most boring stretch of interstate to drive EVER.

  14. If yo can take the extra time, you could swing north to Lincoln and do the Speedway Museum.

  15. The Starbird Museum in Afton OK. Looks pretty cool, There's a transportation Museum in Wichita. It's got locomotives, Planes, Lots a cool stuff. The Flint hills are pretty cool. That might have been the feed lot.

  16. Wow! I just broke an axle shaft on hiway 69 just south of Muskogee. I have a spare and tools but, may need help! Anyone near here?

  18. Gosh, I was about 15 minutes away from the WWII submarine and actually talking to the guy at the museum on the phone getting final directions when "BANG", the right rear portion of the car sunk. I was going very slow, had just pulled away from the side of the hiway. Because of this, I had little speed/momentum. I jabbed the wheel to the right in an effort to get the car and me off of the hiway. Then, told the guy at the museum I would not be visiting today.
Here is what it looked like. Really wierd. No notice of failure at all.
while figuring out what to do, a couple of local car guys stopped and offered help. First thing I did was jack up the rr of the car and put a tow strap on the front bumper and had him slowly pull me further away from the hiway to get out of danger.
I had most of what I needed with me including torches. I got the broken axle out but the seal and the brake shoes were history. He went into town for me to try to get the parts but, was only able to get the shoes.
The axle seal was ordered and will be in tommorrow.
I ended up putting in the extra axle with no seal at all and, with no brakes on the corner, simply pinched and wasted the rr brake line so it would not expand the wheel cylinder. Then put the car together without a drum on the rr. It runs and worked good enough to get me to find a room for the night and find a place to eat.
I'll fix it tommorrow when i get the parts, then continue with the trip.

Never a dull moment but, at least I did not have to get towed.

here are some pics. Could have been much worse.

Holy **** man! Its a good thing you didn't get plowed over by a freaking semi 18 wheeler! Glad your safe. I guess the ol axle could not handle the towing load.

    Carry on Dude.

  20. about the towing load...there really isn't any with a tow dolley. that is why I like them so much. It is not like a trailer with sway and tongue weight. All the weight sits on the dolley axle with only a bit on the hitch itself.
There was a time when i swore by trailers and didn't like dollies until I tried one once. They tow so stable and, when empty, there is obviously no big heavy trailer to lug around.
I don't see how the tow dolly could have caused the problem, plus it was empty too. The old GTO currently has a puke, blow by special 350 for a motor too, no power house so that didn't cause it. It'll eventually get a nice motor but, for now, it is a beater/driver and it is fun to drive and gets good mileage, close to 20.
The only think i don't like about using a dolley is they don't have brakes, or at least mine doesn't. I plan to put brakes on it. I really like towing with a dolley, they are very stable compared to a tag trailer.

I got things out of order for this trip with my axle failure so here is a pic from Thurs after I unloaded the station wagon near St Johns, Az and set this motor on the dolley to deliver in Albuquerque.
This is at Lyman lake near my new home and where my shop will be.

Just talked to this guy on the phone. Seems to have most of it under control, if he can find the right brake parts. Hes got my phone number. Just wanted to keep this towards the top till he up and going.

  22. Thanks Dan,

I did get the parts needed. Got to visit the sub, then headed to Kansas to pick up the wrecked 67 Tempest i bought. Then Sunday was able to spend the day at the Scarebird car show in Tulsa. Now, headed home on I-40 west of OK city/El Reno area.
    Will post pics later.

    thanks again everyone.
