I'm p***ing the sickness on to my children and I'm working on this car right now for my daughter. It's the project on deck...finally. It's an old amu*****t park car. It's about 8 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. It's pretty heavy fibergl*** and I'm going to build an all new frame for it. I'm wondering if there is some cool go kart driveline to pilfer for this thing? It's going to get paint and an actual interior and I want it to be able to do about 25 MPH but I also want to be able to govern that speed for now. I'm not asking much am I??? hehe. I know NOTHING about go karts. I would like to keep this pretty period correct too because you guys have given me that sickness too.
Build the drivetrain like a mini bike. Briggs and Stratton with centrifical clutch and chain drive on axle.
if the wheel base is close to being right , it would be easy to mount the body to this one .... http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/for/1036054607.html
http://www.gokartsupply.com/ ^^^has a bunch off stuff for you. ATV are a good source of parts. Most of the *****en wheels available for golf carts will also bolt up to ATV axles. I grabbed a 5hp go-cart off evilbay for my nephew for 200 bucks and it flat out flies. Just a grocery store variety with a FG indy style body on it, pavement only. It will do peg-leg burnouts, doughnuts, and close to 40 with me on it. It also has a super easy steering mod to put some ackerman in it and it corners like its on rails with that mod. Needs better brakes!
Uncle Scooby: There are many Kart shops around Indy but a trip out to Greenfield on US40 & Comet Kart Sales will answer all your questions & they have all the things you would need to convert your project into a running machine. Bill Wallace
Hey, I'm in West Lafayette right now and there's a high performance go kart shop. They've got a 5hp Briggs and Stratton for $50 if you want that thing. I'm here just for school, I go home every now and then back to Carmel. The shop's number is 765-742-0935, and their website is www.foxvalleykart.com. I've got one of their high-po engines that get used on racing karts I'm trying to get rid of, too. It puts out about 17hp stock, and it's been pretty heavily modified.
Forgot to mention, I'm gonna be home this weekend working on my Cadillac. If you want to see that engine I have, let me know.
Hey Scooby. 3/8ths hole in a restritor plate between the carb and block. will slow the top speed down without hurting the low end torque. Then you can gradually increase the size as you want the car to speed up.
I have a Stuz go cart made by Foxcraft 1n '59 it has a 2.5 hp Brigs motor solid axles and will do almost 30 mph.
Big project. I'd be tempted to find a running kart of suitable dimensions and chop about 50% of the labor off so you can focus on making it cool. If you want it front engine, a lawn tractor ch***is might be a reasonable start. Plus if you affix the gear lever, there's your variable speed control good luck
