So i have a question, mabey someone can help.

Why is it that certain brands of automobile were canceled here in the state?
I just learned that Ford is still making the Falcon, Galaxie, and Fairlane, but only in austrailia.

    What gives?

Pure marketing... Keeping the product selection "fresh and new" in an attempt to boost sales.

consider the mustang.... it has sold well it's entire 1/2 century life, so it has survived.

Those are model names, not brands. A brand is something like Mercury from Ford, Pontiac from GM or Dodge from Chrysler. That apart, it's just a way of reviving a name a decade or two down the line, from a model that was successful, to boost sales, even though the new model has nothing other than maybe, and I say maybe, a generic type in common with the original. Compare the 1980s/1990s T-birds with the open 2 seater original - nothing in common at all until they came up with the short lived early 21st C retro-revival model, which tanked.

And under the "brand" disappearance info... Didja hear that Saturn, Saab and Hummer are pretty much done for? Also, the Durango, PT Loser and Aspen are out. Buick sales are down 81% from 2003 numbers... Move over Oldsmobile, Buick needs a place to lay down next to ya.

Now, obviously I like Buicks... but not the new-ish ones. Hell the last decent Buick was the Grand National. All the other cars I listed have never really done anything for me and I wouldn't consider purchasing one, so this news isn't exactly gonna keep me up at night. Just throwin the info out there.

  5. Didn't you know? Ford likes to start everything with 'F' nowadays. Focus, Fusion, Freestyle, etc.

Keep your eyes peeled for the all new 2011 Fustang.

The last decade of LeSabre/Park Avenue is hands-down the best domestic sedan other than cadillac. I've driven all the brands full & midsizes extensively thru work rentals, and can't believe how poorly that platform is marketed. Really good cars.

Yeah, new cars aren't really the same, but to say the last decent buick was the GN ain't telling the whole story. When GNs were new I remember old dudes were calling them junk too.

Would be a sad thing to see em close.

Buick isn't leaving. The Chinese love 'em. Pontiac is the brand that's closer to the coffin.

  10. I was disappointed the other day when I found out they quit making Bonney tools. Bonney tools were really high quality made-in-USA hand tools, and now they're history I guess. The Bonney wrenches in my toolbox are some of favorites.

  11. Because the pathetic American car companies are trying their hardest to out-Japanese the Japanese. A perfect example is Pontiac. Why would anybody want to drive vehicles with names like Bonneville and Grand Prix that evoke thoughts and feelings and emotions when you can just drive something bland and soul-less like a G8, G6, or G5. Last I checked, Pontiac built EXCITEMENT, but it sure as hell don't seem like it.

The average new car buyer views a vehicle simply as an appliance; this country's love affair with the (new) automobile is all but over.

I'm with you, my Park Avenue was the best car i ever owned, except for my toys.

  15. Watch for several of the "hot" model names like GTO, 442, Grand Sport, etc., become trim packages on warmed over Chevrolet's. Stick a different grill, taillight plastic and some badges, and presto they keep their history alive.....NOT

  16. The Ford Excrement and Extrusion are due sometime nest year:p and the F 150 Pick Up Fruck.
I think the Buick SUV looks pretty good for an SUV (Onclave?)

Thats cause they're Fugly!! Now that new 500 they came out with had potential...till they started talking about it being the "new" taurus. 500 being a callback to the Galaxie 500 I believe, though nowhere close.

There will be more brands disappearing if they want to survive. Beyond the mid-60s, what has been the point of having badge engineered makes like Pontiac other than to support a dealer network that is twice as big as it needs to be.

The other key thing is relevance. I went to the Toronto Auto Show yesterday. You can see the writing on the wall by just observing. All the German, Korean and some Japanese manufacturers had people crowded around their models. You could roll a bowling balls through Ford, GM, Chrysler and Honda without hitting anyone except the company reps. Other than a few people looking at Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers and trucks the displays were dead.

People today (at least my perception of Canadians) buy cars either as appliances or to treat themselves. If they want a reliable family hauler that has good resale and mileage, they hop in a Hyundai, Honda, Toyota or Chysler minivan. If they want a higher priced performance sedan, SUV or wagon they hit the German or Japanese manufacturers.

The marketing is also ****ty. People in my age group (38) would NOT drive a new Cadillac, Buick or Lincoln to show they've "arrived". (not unless you like getting laughed at) They still have the "grandpa" car image from the 1990s. Dealerships also help reinforce it. A few years ago went to a Cadillac dealership to drive a near new Catera they had on the lot that I liked. They treated me like a second cl*** citizen. I finally just walked out and ended up buying an Infiniti.

there is no need for Buick anymore... every parts store in town sells plastic stick on portholes for your Chevy... add portholes= instant Buick.

I just got back from a trip to Argentina. I hadn't been in country 10 minutes and I saw 4 '62 Falcon 4 doors. Everywhere I went there were Falcons. I also saw wagons and one Ranchero. Some of them had goofy looking square headlights and taillights. Seriously, about every 10th car on the road was a Falcon. I later learned from a local guy that they were produced down there until 1989! He told me that when they stopped production, the Argentines were pissed.I asked why,and he said "Because the Falcon was such a nice ,big family car"!

  26. Youbetcha...they're selling like hot cakes cuz I'm so famous and ***y!!!!!!!

I tried to buy the first one off the ***embly line. I couldn't get to first base on that deal. Toyota HQ in Torrance acted like I was bothering them with my interest in the vehicle bearing my name. Screw em, I'll tow my Fiat comp coupe with my Dodge quad cab since Fiat will probably own all of Chrysler in a year or two.

I'm still bummed that the Kaiser, DeSoto, Studebaker, Edsel, Cord, Crosley, Frazer, Gram (Hupmobile), Henry J, King Midget, Nash, Packard, Rambler, Willys, and Tucker are all gone!
