nice fabrication but you need some help with your engineering. You have some pretty obvious issues to deal with if this thing is gonna be driven regularly. even if you don't plan to the person you sell this to may, and legally you'd be liable. bad lesson to learn.

not a good attitude if you are planning on selling or working on customer cars.

Think what you want but Steve (El Polacko) went easy on you. If anyone on here, hell anywhere, knows suspensions it's him. You seem to have taken it personally. Don't.

I'd say get some education as to the engineering portion of suspensions, read all you can. There is way to much at stake to just go at it without knowing how it works.

cant learn if you dont try though. I was 18 with no experience doing anything fabricating or engineering , so i went for what i would thought work. and so for it has. I understand that there are some engineering flaws, and i have fixed the ones that i think are vital to the trucks saftey. Which is really only the front bag mounts now have an over the engine crossmember to add some stability.

as for learning and reading. I am, mechanical engineer major now only 3 months in, but ill get there.

Hey Brandon, forget all the haters on here. There just jealous that a 19 year old has better skills then they do. The truck is looking bas ass.
I like the style you got going on with it.
Keep the build going and it will turn out just fine.
Keep us posted on the build.

thanks to everyone for the good advice, and sometimes terrible critizism. I needed it. at first I knew i didnt know everything, but in my mind everything worked. and up untill this point, the front suspension still works. although its never moved further than down my street. I started building a sort of "cage" i guess you could call it. its a sort of sleeve that goes inside of my bag mounts and bolts to the sides of the bag mounts, and then to 2 points of the frame. from there 2 support tubes run over the motor in the front and rear of the carb to add some support. ill take some photos of it when its done. im hoping that this will be enough support. It was my first truck, and my first time doing a lot of shit. i learned a lot of what not to do from the experience. my next project will most certinaly come out better than this one.

Although i havent gotten a whole lot of work done on the truck because ive been busy with some other projects, mostly painting.

    but heres a few pictures

started mounting the new brake set up. its actually finished now, but i dont have any photos. switched to a universal under the floor brake booster, and im running an early 70s corvette master cylinder, just finished up the brake lines this past weekend, loots pretty good

that bed has been retired to the scrap yard, i picked up one that was still rough but not as warped from phx for about 250 bucks after gas and everything so it wasnt that bad of a deal.

and heres what ive been working on. I know this isnt really hamb approved, but i got paid to do it. All i did was body work and paint, shaved the handles, molded the mirriors, roof, and some other stuff. this thing was wavy as all hell, its still not quite perfect but kid just wanted it done. blocking takes a lot of time
    [IMG]

and this cab is what ive been working on for the last few weeks, this is when i brought it home. guys paying me 500 bucks to body work it and put it in primer. which i feel like is rediculously cheap(but he has a 29 model a tudor sedan i want!). cab corners, bout a 4x6 patch in the floor, and shaved anteanna. plus fixing allllll the fricking dents in this thing, its beat to hell all the way around.

Great work! Hope you get to finish it! the other projects and customer work is looking sharp too.

But I have to ask, Is that a CUT front radius arm in this picture. the tie rod should be going through there. Looks like to just cut the top half off of it! that's the only thing keeping the wheel in the forward postion. 1 good curb and it'll fold like a wet noodle... But i know, there aren't any curbs between your place and the show... besides your gonna sell it anyways.

But, you do good work. Keep it up. Good luck on the Mech Eng program. I start mine the summer semester.

  10. Welding to fresh paint is not good work. Sorry.

paint was ground where the welds are. plenty fine to weld on. I weld for a living bud. i just wanted to take off as little paint as possible. if you zoom way in, you can see.

yes it is, but thats not how its going to stay, i basiaclly threw the truck together for a show so that i could get some business comming in my shop, it worked, but now i have to go back and finish some things thats 1 of those things. the tie rods are z'd 4 inches down and gusseted with 1/4 plate. as for the radius rod, i made a new upper peice out of 3/8s plate im just yet to weld it in.

  12. Nope, I see your miniscule grinding marks, I also see the smoked paint, you really need to take more paint off. Most of us just want to see things done right.

  13. okay, I'll chime in as well. Questionable faults aside, you completely amaze me. At your age, to have so much talent, drive, and even opportunity! To top it off, you are so articulate. You must have amazing parents. Combine all this with the family business and more money on hand than most kids, i have but on bit of advice. Stay humble.

  14. I zoomed in as best as I could with my High Definition monitor. I can see your very small grind marks just above the upper weld, but I also see plenty of char around the weld from burned paint.

You have to re-spray the area anyway, why not prepare a larger area and weld the bracket on properly.

Are you using a 110V MIG welder? Straight Co2 gas?

The reason I ask is because those welds seem a bit cold and lumpy.

yup a 110v straight co2, its all i can use now, ive got a big mig and a tig id like to be using, but in finishing the project at my house seeing as i had to shut down my shop. We dont have 220 at my house. It will be plenty strong once the entire thing is welded. like i stated, that was just to get everything set up so i could figure out a brake pedel.

  16. Ok, save the Co2 for sheet metal work. It cools the weld down more rapidly than mix does.

my 140 is what i usually use for sheet metal work. ive got 2 6foot argon/co2 mixes but they are in storage with my large machine.

business is gone, and has been for a long time. I hate the truck but im trying to finish it. I screwed up a lot on it, now going through and fixing everything is hell. I just c ant wait to get it done. Everything is finished except the bed and the electrical. Ive been running wires for a few days mounting my valves and getting all that ready the over engine crossmember is done and came out sweet, i cut the brake booster mount off, ground off all the paint and re welded it all. Everythings been fixed/redone and painted

beds completly framed up and im just finishing up the metal work ill post pics at the end of the week

I dont really like to post on here because of all the idiots that have to make a point to prove someone wrong. Thats the only thing that sucks with the internet, too many people have a voice. Maybe if only smart people would chat or post. One day I hope....

Anyways I been watching this thread for a while and have to say the truck is sick man. I wish I had the knack and drive to do build a full custom truck. VERY NICE. Keep your head up everyone is in a bind. Again totally dig the truck and cant wait for some progress photos. BAD ASS

well ive been back at it. I chopped my 40 chevy, and its sitting in the front yard unfinished, and i was able to rent a space at a friends shop, hauled all my shit down there been there for 3 days. Built a completly new frame all the rails/ xmembers everything is brand new. I just layed the rails on the floor today, I was about to finish welding in my engine xmember and i ran out of sheilding gas. The entire chassis has been tig welded thus far, although mthe rails are all ground smooth.

Ill post some pictuers next week once i get everything as a roller.

larzbahrs- you have a garage man. Thats more than i have by far.. and its free for you. So use it, save your nickles and go buy some damn tools, welders what ever you need. I worked my ass off through highschool buying tools, and if this is the kind of shit you wanna do. Start buying it now. while you dont have a assload of bills.

I started with a dirt front yard. and i still just have a dirt front yard. While i had a shop for a while. The economy is to bad right now, and im to broke to consider starting one up again now. So dont let not having a shop be your excuse. Make your garage, your shop
