What size DOM tubing is needed for me to use the 11/16th weld in bunds with ford tierods??
Speed ways 50$ dragliknk kit doesn't fit my size.

If you use 3/4 tap tube, available from any circle track chassis shop, you can eliminate the bungs. Best to use a lathe to do the tapping as it's tuff stuff... not impossible to tap, just easier on a lathe.

  3. places like Pete & Jake's use 7/8" OD DOM with a .156 wall....then drill out to 5/8" tap drill size for the 11/16-18

    I used 7/8 OD X .125 wall . 625 ID a 24 ft. piece was 85.00 at alro steel. It's the correct size to tap for 11/16 .

I'm looking to use the weld in bungs so i do not have to do any taping

  6. who makes 11/16-18 thread left and right bungs for tie rods? Speedway has 11/16-18 right hand bungs , but they are sized to weld into the ends of wishbones

i believe the tie rods/ drag links that Speedway sells can be purchased in any custom length....maybe you could check with them. i'm not real sure what they and others offer for tie rods because i just make my own from 7/8" OD DOM .188 wall tubing . i have a big pile of it.

I bought a 11/16 right and left hand tap from Speedway
I machined a piece of 1" round x 3-1/2" long to slip into a 1" x .125 wall dom x .25 deep on one end and drilled and taped the other end for the tie rod end and just tig welded the part in the end of the 1" x .125 DOM tube

  9. heatnbeat , i'm sure that will work fine, your 1" x 125 wall is more than strong enough ....i just prefer to make tie rods/draglinks out of one solid piece of 7/8" DOM tubing. if you have the taps, why not.

it doesn't sound like mink has the taps..and i'm not sure if left and right 11/16-18 bungs are available. i may be wrong

Speedway has the 11/16th weld in bungs left thread as well as right thread . But i couldn't find anything on the speedway which says what inner diameter tube they fit in .

should i even be using weld in bungs on the steering? I figure i will have a shop weld around the circumference of the bung to the DOM tubing and also put some rosette welds in other places on the bung

  15. ok , i checked speedway and they do have 11/16-18 right and left bungs. they say they are for splitting wishbones, but i see no reason they can't be used on a tie rod

measuring one , they are 1" OD on the small end , and 1-1/4" overall OD. if you used a piece of tubing 1-1/4" OD with a .125 wall (1/8") it would slip right in. the tie rod would look a little BIG , but work

welding in bungs on tie rods is fine if done properly , your plan sounds fine. they do it on race cars all the time. i would use a tig

have you checked with Speedway on a custom length one out of 7/8" od?

if you have an existing Speedway draglink that is too long , shortening is no big deal...but you would need a lathe and a 11/16 tap

    36-3window

Thank you for the dimensions. A rough estimate of the draglink i need from eye to eye is 21 in. This was with the box centered and spindle straight. With all of that done the corvair steering arm doesn't stick completely straight down. So i'll have adjust that by fileing off some spleen in the corvair arm

Why not make it easy and look at Speedway 916-32504 or 916-32514 depending on the length you need. Steel 7/8 tube cut to length, tapped with tie rod ends and jam nuts for around $50 to $70?

  18. i just check the draglinks on Speedway's site and this is what its said :

"Custom lengths also available, please specify desired length in comments section of shopping cart."

Just buy a drag link the right length ready to go as others have mentioned...$50 or so with tie rod ends - ready to go...don't over think it..
