So i have a 69' SBC and i've been looking at pics on here to figure out what brackets to buy to mount my alternator. I know this may sound real dumb to a lot of you guys, but unfortunately i need some help. THANX in advance!! Probably more dumb questions coming in a the very near future !! Ian
I like the low mounts best, followed by stock, then stock serpentine (for function) and finally billet aftermarket. but really, a spacer and heim joints can make a real cool mount for cheap.
need better pic of right side of motor to really scope out what bolt holes ya have where....low mount, right left, stock mounts, march brackets can be hidden well too...i've even huing them upside down on the right side...(was one of many setups in my vega over the years...)off the headers is old style, but they can be a headache to keep adjusted sometimes.... ...
is it me or are the bolt hole in the head missing? those might be early heads and then you have to have low hung------
Camel hump heads, and no holes . the only mounting holes i see are the ones on the water pump. Thats why im very confused. I would love to see pics!! I like the top mounted alternarors, so im trying to figure out that set up. thanx guys!!
http://www.marchperf.com/instructions/20122_intructions.pdf this is one of the nicer March setups..works great even without heads with holes...just requires a long water pump... http://www.marchperf.com/pg7.html if ya look there's pdf instructions for all of them...and they hide fairly well....
speedway brackets, Jitney, stock or make your own (which is my favorite ). http://www.waldenspeedshop.com/jitney.html
Bill's Hot Rod Company in Covina, CA - www.billshotrodcompany.com - makes steel brackets for early non hole SBC heads chrome plated or plain. I have a set on my 327 and they work great.
1oldtimer gave ya some good info. I had a '67 Camaro and I ran a 1969 327 in it with those exact 202 Camel backs in it. Of course, back in 1984 I had to finagle my own bracket for the alt......grrrr
The easiest way is to go with TransDapt #9254 bracket at the header; 9008, altenator mount bracket; 9079 adjusting arm bracket. These will mount altenator drivers side, high (just like chevy did). If you go with billet stuff go with Billet Specialities, avoid March. I've used both and March just dosn't compare with quality and customer service. Give me a shout if you have problems, oj
low mount drivers side is cleanest I think, I like to get them out of the way. low mount pass side dosn't usually work on pass side because of the lower radiator hose. Unless you turn the alt. around then that creates a whole nother mess. Alan grove or speedway is probly your best bet. you spent a lot of time makin that engine look good, it would be a shame to junk it up mountin that thing high up, keep it low. good luck
This guy has some great stuff- very logically laid out with diagrams, etc: http://stores.ebay.com/JNV-SPECIALTY-COMPONENTS You also need to establish if you really have a short or long water pump motor. Unlike someone else, I don't see accessory holes in the heads-- which means that its a short water pump motor. BUT....the Long water pump setup technically started for the 1969 model year in passenger cars. Possibly later for trucks.
Like Fridge says. First find out if you have the 'long' pump. Looks to be one but hard to tell from pic angle. Both brackets and pulleys will need to be matched to pump "type". Originally, the long pump ('69 up) alt mounts on pass side. Short pump (pre '69) alt on driver's side. So, if you use original GM brackets, that's what you'll have. (Those are pre '69 heads) I've used Alan Grove many times, great fit.
thanx guys! i have it installed and i like the way it looks. it sits next to the valve cover on the drivers side. Ian
