School me on Y Blocks

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hemisteve, Feb 24, 2009.

  1. I've got a line on a '62 Ford F600 - it has an original running Y Block. Anyone know what size it would be? I recall hearing about some REALLY big inch Y Blocks used in the big trucks of the era - something on the order of 534 ci - but not sure what this F600 would run. Any ideas?

  2. It may have the HD292 Y block, which is of the same family as Ford/Mercury Y blocks. These have steel cranks & a couple of other differences from a std. Y block.

If it's one of the Lincoln-derived Y blocks, it's likely either a 302 or 332; no relation to either the SBF 302 or the FE 332. They have steel cranks, which are to an extent desirable to build a stroker. It should also have a std. Holley-flanged 4bbl. intake.

The other line you are thinking of is the 477/501/534 SD (Super Duty) line, which is a completely different animal, loosely related to the MEL engines. They weigh around 1000 lbs.

  3. Thanks for the info - here's a pic . . .

Anyone know how to ID this thing? Where do I look for numbers and where do I look to decode them?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  4. If it is original to the truck, it is a 292, the base truck motor into '64, it was used in trucks up to F700, it MIGHT have the better crank. A holley 2 barrel was standard in '62.

If original to the truck, that would be a 292. Check the block right above the oil filter for numbers(if its a cleveland block, most 292's are) if you don't see numbers there, check the block right by the distributor.

The motor pictured is a 292 Medium duty motor. The HD 292 was optional on f-600's and came with a 4 barrel.

ID'ing the heads is done by a flange(on the head) under the front intake port, you'll have to feel the number. www.ford-y-block.com for identification.

  6. Thanks all - that gives me a good basis. I'll be putting the running engine/manual trans in the classifieds soon.

If it is a Y Block it will be a 292 & should have the hard to find steel crank too . It's a different engine than the everyday ones you see all the time , but a good power plant and you can get lots of ponies out of them if your pockets are deep enough ! How's the tune of 660+ HP if you have the money and that's on race gas , not nitrous either ! You can get stroker kits for them too . I have 2 - Y blocks myself and really love the sound ! :D
If you want to know more about Y blocks and where to get good performance parts just send me an e-mail to my home address .
