    You have three possibilities--
    3:91/1-- 3 speed
    4:27/1-- O.D. and station wagon 3 speed
    4:55/1-- Station wagon

3 ratios were available in 1949:
    3.91:1
    4.27:1
    4.55:1

sorry man, we are building this for a customer, and he requested a nine inch. the last rear end in this car was a t-bird diff with 3.27 gears, he said it revved too high with that set up. the car has a flattie with mooneyes injection, and a c4 behind it. do you think 3.50's would be too steep for this set up??

Stock ratio for Merc-O-matic flathead in '51 is 3.31. The 3.27 gears should be just about right with the C-4. The 3.50 gears would make it rev even higher. If you decide to go with 9", consider something out of a pickup truck. ( this keeps the original 5 1/2" wheel bolt pattern of the Merc.)

  9. 3.27 gears with 28's won't rev hardly at all. If he needs less revs you'd want to go 2.73 or something like that but I'm sure the car will feel like a uhaul truck from a full stop.

just finished talking to the customer, and he is now talking of doing a blown flattie in the car. just measured the tires, and they are 27 inches tall. 3.23 better, or maybe evem a 3.00?

his speedo wasnt working at the time, so we really have no idea how fast he was going...im sure it was up there!

  12. I'd do the 3.00's to keep him happy.

I'm not sure what gears mine has, it has a GM rear end, maybe 3.55's or 3.73's.
