So, after seeing the article on Mooneye's kuckle-head powered salt flat race car in Hot Rod Deluxe (I think it was that mag), I've decided to build a panhead powered bellytanker out of nothing but parts from the engine that I pick up's era and of course the stuff I have to fab. What I need is if anyone has any good resources on similar Harley-cars and building cl***ic salt flat racers. Thank you Chris
I would think the first step would be to get a current SCTA handbook and build it to the specs needed to p*** tech. In racing functionality comes first and period is second. Good luck.
The best thing you can do is get a rulebook, the 2009 books are now available sales@scta-bni.org or www.scta-bni.org website You can ask some basic questions and Rich or I can help you along. The www.landracing.com/lsr forums is a good place to ask questions. The basic idea is to figure what your goals are. Find out which cl***es will fill your goal and decide if you can build to be compe***ive within your resources. A problem that happens very often is that someone has a car/bike in their posession and wants to build it to race. Just because you have one or it is your personal favorite does not mean it will be compe***ive in cl***. Doing homework is essential, DW
You can also check out the Utah Salt Flats Racing ***ociation (USFRA). They host World of Speed, Sept. 16-19, 2009. You can find more info and rule books at their website- http://www.saltflats.com
Not a super important detail but Dan isn't the chief inspector, "Kiwi" Steve Davies is. Steve's job is to get down and dirty and crawl all over your car and make sure you followed the safety/tech rules as set forth by Dan, the SCTA tech committee, and the SCTA board. Dan is the go-to guy for rules clarifications as in this instance and he's also the person who certifies records. There is a LOT of cross over between the different function of these people and everyone (including myself) is usually more than happy to ***ist. A super important point that needs to be made to all aspiring car builders is that all new constructions must be submitted to the appropriate body cl*** chair persons for review. Even if it's a sketch of your ch***is on a napkin, they've got to see it before you show up ready to set the world on fire. It's for your own good.
