Hey, I'm trying to ship a ~1300lb 12' x 5' x 4' from West Lafayette, IN to Fontana, CA. It's a solar powered car that's being entered in a race. I've been told that there are some guys on here that do shipping for a living, and thought I'd give this a shot and see what happens. If this is the totally wrong forum for this, well, sorry about that. Anyway, if anyone can help that'd be great, thanks!

It's gonna be packaged really well inside the crate. It's fragile, but it should be able to handle some punishment.

A LTL (less than truckload) carrier will handle the crate several times while it crosses the USA ..Guess would be 4-5 times while it crosses the docks at some hubs ..On something of that size going on Yellow, or RL carriers, etc (several LTL carriers) .. I would think they would be around $2500.00
or so you will have to take it to a terminal and pick it up at a terminal for the best price ..I'd guess the timeline at 7-14 days
more you spend the faster it will get there (priority)

You can click on link and fill in the blanks for a more accurate number
I ship most of my stuff on flatbed style trailers, our rate would be $2000.00 and it would take about 6 days to get there, just depending on when it ships ,etc ..could be as quick at 4-5 days maybe

I use unishippers.com for all our truck freight, makes it easy and saves money over going direct to the freight companies. Call them at 800 377 3105 and it's as good as done.
Freightquote.com is supposed to be good also.
Uship.com is an option but I've never used it. I bought a box making machine from a farmer in the midwest, he shipped it through uship.com. A guy calls me for directions, pulls up a few days later with it in a horse trailer, picked it up to help pay for the trip east to pick up a small tractor to take home.

Yes, you can use many sources .. My biggest tip is whomever you intrust to move your items..

MAKE SURE THEY HAVE CARGO INSURANCE if the item has a "high" value
I can tell you 100's of horror stories of propery damaged, lost, etc.

Try ABF. You can reserve one of their 26' tag along trailers. You load and lock it, they drive it, you unload at the destination. Pretty reasonable pricing. You don't have to pay for the whole thing either, they'll rent them by the foot with a locking wall to separate your stuff from the next guy's stuff.

Is that kind of like PODS where you rent a container that they can ship?

Ya for sure. It's definitely worth at least one pretty penny:D

Like PODS, but its full or partial trailer. They also do a POD-like service too. Check out their website. If someone you know has a commercial account the discounts get pretty steep, like up to 70% off list.
