Can anybody tell me the reason that ford had that extra filler tank instead of filling at the radiator.I am currently running a 390 in my car and want to know if i am going to have any problems running it without one
radiator was lower than the top of the engine, it was a "burp" tank so they could fill it the whole way.
any problems running without it? I have put a 390 in my lincoln, know that i look at it the top of the radiator is higher than the engine
You shouldnt have any problems, I run a regular thermostat housing on mine with no issues. If in doubt, remove a heater hose and fill the system, if you hold the hose higher than the eng or the rad, it will force any air out the heater core and you will no issues with air lock. Brad
What Dakota said is Correct. If your water level in your current Rad is above the intake manifold you do not need the Burp Tank. The Wizzard
I have a different theory. It is there so that if You are testing an f.e. with a blown head gasket, it shoots the geyser of superheated water directly into the bottom of the hood, insuring everything in front of the car, (including You, innocent bystanders, and the shop cat) are equally scalded. that and it makes for a larger surface to burn the piss outta Yourself with when You inadvertantly touch it whilst adjusting the timing. but I am pretty sure that's just a bonus. and it's another fun place for it to leak from. especially when freshly restored, painted black, and has that mystical "where is the steam coming from" quality to it. Oh Yeah! Almost forgot! It also does a damn fine job of making it nearly impossible to assemble the 700 piece fan shroud on T-Birds.
L.M.A.O. I can tell Lux Blue has had many encounters with several 60-66 Fords in his day. I can totally relate. The Wizzard
