Here's an odd one. I had a 1976 Ford F-150, with the 5 lug steelies. I went to the junkyard last weekend and found a sweet set of wheels just like on my F-150.

I have a 8.8" rear end, out of a 98 Explorer, with disc brakes. (I don't have the rear end with me now, it's getting rebuilt, so I can't measure)

Since there was an Explorer right by, I took the wheels over to it, and tried to put them in. No go.

Were to old rims 5x5"? OR are the new Ford patterns different? Am I sofa king wee todd did?

  3. Take a look at the early Econolines.

I had three wheels I took directly off an Econoline.

Thought I did well since they were 4 1/2" pattern and 15".

Part I forgot about was the small center hole.

Gave em to a pal with a 50 Shoebox coupe.
He was pleased and said the small center hole would be the same as the original.

(The wheels would fit neither the Mustang or Camaro disc brake front ends I have since both of those hubs are larger so disc brakes may be a moot point.)

68 Mustang 14" wheels should fit the disc brakes.
I had a drum braked 59 Ranchero and ran the Mustang 14" wheels on it for a while.

Aftermarket 14" slot mags will fit over both the Mustang and Camaro disc brakes with no probs.

unless I'm mistaken i don't think he is looking for a late model ford steel wheel ,but is actualy looking for a wheel that has the cl***ic look of an early ford/merc wheel with the small clip in cap,but with late ford p*** car 4 1/2 lug pattern, the only oem one I've ever came across is the early international wheel as mentioned in this thread or if you are not worried about period correct many of the aftermarket guys offer a selection of early style wheels with any lug pattern you want , if I am wrong and you just want regular steel wheels to take say a 59 ford hub cap then I think some bigger fords in th 70's used a 15 x7, but watch the lug pattern as ford used 4 1/2 and 5 " on p*** cars

Also the Studebaker wheels are 15 x 4 & 1/2' wide. I found one that is 15 x 4. And they take an early Mopar dog dish hubcap.

49-56 Fords 15 inch I think 57 went to 14's could be wrong. But mopar also had 15 inch 4 1/2 bolt pattern all through the early 60's up through at least 1975.

Some of the 70s Ford products are still 5 on 41/2, even in the big 'uns. Others, on into the 80s had 5 on 5 pattern like BOPs and Chevy trucks. The 5 on 41/2 is very common and you should be able to find what you want and need easily at the salvage yard.

  13. Most Ford trucks I'm familiar with are 5 on 5 1/2"

Another option most aren't aware of is the early Volvo wheels found on 122s and 544s. Real skinny though.

All those Crown Vic police cars and taxicabs you see have 5 on 4.5" circle wheels and are 15"X7"or so. SO do the Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Marquis. BUT the hubcap situation there is weird. Some use dogdish caps or those odd knuckly center caps, others a cap that goes halfway to the rim(these we used on the 32 3W Coupe), others wheel covers ONLY.

Very useful thread! Thanks to all that contribute.

Looking for a set of 5.5 inch 60's Volvo steel rims. If you got at least two for a fair price send me an PM.

    Thanks,

  16. ALL this talk....and NO mention of BACK SPACING....I would think THAT is a MUST KNOW situation, as well.
This chart came at just the right time, as I'm searching for 5 on 4.5 wheel pattern and their application.....but....is there another way to find out the BACK SPACING on those 5 on 4.5 wheels in your chart??? email me (STEVE) at coupedeviller@gmail.com. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS....

Do not forget to check the center locating hole , the are different diameters.

  18. 63 and 64 Galaxy and Galaxy XL’s could be ordered with 15’s when a 427 engine was ordered.
Had a weird 1956 style MERCURY looking wheel cover to fit the rim.
