I got a toyota p/s kit from cpp for my p/u. I installed it, not to many problems, but I cant get the hoses at the box to quit leaking. I tried teflon tape, I got the fittings so tight Im about to round them off. I called cpp they said, send back the fittings we will look at them. I dont want to send them back , hell thats 2 or 3 weeks more to wait. Any sugestions on how to stop the leaks ?
yea, go to a farm supply and have them make new hoses, or, see if you can find a part number on them, and get new hoses... or, send them back... any way you slice it, you're hosed
This may not be the place, maybe I should start a new thread. Any way here goes. What box/gear are you using? Fenderless
do they have those in the great state of Calley Four Nia? Do the fittings require an o-ring seal? Many Japanese systems do.
I live in the Salinas Valley, thats all they got here besides lettuce and fab shops. No o-rings that I can tell ,dont no much about them japonise cars.
Are the hose sealing surfaces seating all the way when tightened down? So basically if the fitting is tight, it does not draw the hose end down far enough for it to seal on its chamfer. If you have access to small teflon washers, put one in the hole the hose screws into before the hose. Tighten it down, and you should be good. Make any sense?
Do you have a pic of the fitting end? Some do require an oring, some are compression fit. I have a bunch from changing P/s racks and hoses, they always have an extra one in the pack, and I save any used ones that look good. Just because you never know when you need one. Napa should have them.
If you cannot find washers, put some teflon tape around the end of the hose. Wrap it so it just goes over the flare. try 3-4 wraps. You do not want too much covering the actual hole, but a liitle bit on the edges wont do much. That might be enough to take up any clearance issues.
I had the same problem with a Toyota 4X4 box in my 61 Pick up. The problem was the threads in the box. Apparently in their infinite wisdom the Japs used a couple of different suppliers for those boxes and the threads weren't exactly the same. I changed boxes to get it to seal. Eventually I used the first box in another project and went to the junk yard and took every PS line they had on a Toy Truck. It was only the 4th one from an original truck before I got one to quit leaking. Pain in the Ass. The guy at Gotta Show, who makes the PS hose kits told me that he had seen some Toyota boxes that just wouldn't seal with anything other than the original hose from that particular truck. It's a weird metric thread, not common
OFACE, Take your hoses to CSC on abbott st ( between johnsons and motion ind. ) They stock all the metric adaptors and fittings to fix you up ! If you have any trouble call me . I am in Castroville. Dave 831-262-7294
Thanks for the replys. I got pissed at LIL PINCHA about 5:00 covered him up went in had a few beers to calm down. I tried the teflon tape didnt work. Desert Rat Im going to Napa on Monday to look for the washers thank you. Dave thanks for the info, I was going to check out Pacific Truck then Ill check out CSC see what they got. Ya know this realy pisses me off you would think when they sell these kits the fucken hoses would fit and not leak. I have to drop the exhaust, the headers pull up the floor, steering column and linkage to pull box out,not that Im complaning. Works been slow so this keeps me sane. Thanks again.
Oface, Pacific truck is awesome but,,, They do not specialise in hyd. stuff like CSC. If you do go to pac.truck, talk to Bob Pitts..Tell him i sent you.. Good luck BTW aeroquip and others sell the tapered (cone shaped ) washers to help seal the inverted fittings..CSC stocks them, they are not teflon, they are soft metal like brake tubing.. Dave
I have a shop that specializes in Jap. car repairs and it seems that around the early to mid eighties many of the Jap. manufacturers switched the thread type on their hydraulic lines.I would recommend taking a thread pitch gauge and a caliper to see what you are working with.It may be easier to find banjo bolts with the correct threads..but then of course you will have to change the ends on your hoses to banjo type. I'm interested in how this turns out as I am thinking about putting the Toyota set-up in my '59 F100.Good luck ! Steve (V7)
Hey, just got back from Tahoe, its a long story, but any way tomorrow if its not raining to hard Im going to pull the box and hoses.Dave thanks for the help, Ill go by there tomorrow and see what they have.Steve Ill let you know how it turns out. Heres a picture of the kit I got from CPP. I downloaded it off the internet.
Well I pulled the box and hoses took them to csc. It seems that the box has two diff. threads, one side is tapered and one side is straight. A young man named Josh helped me out. He sold me a tapered fitting with a washer and o-ring.The other side was a straight fitting but I needed to change the hose end to match. Cost about $27.00 for everything. Hooked it all up this morning worked great no leaks. Thanks to all that helped me with this problem.
