I have heard that during the late 60's early 70's Toyota produced a Hemi engine for their large trucks an limo's, never exported outside of Japan. Can anyone confirm or put this rumor to rest.

Its true, there was a v-8 version, which is pretty rare over on our side of the pond. There is also a 4 cyl version. I am putting one in my track t. I will run a couple of side drafts on it, a zoomie header, and have modified a red-ram valve cover to bolt onto it. I will have alot of people scratching their heads at it for sure!

If you get Goodguys magizne John Robinson of Tulsa had one in a 25 Track T. It made the cover of the magazine. Getting one out of Japan now would be hard to do.Get a hold of Goodguys for the month and year.

A guy had one of the V8s in a model A at GG Scottsdale this year. Most obvious thing I noticed was the center spark plug holes are right next to each other.

    good luck

ok, keep in mind, I have stripped the thing down since this pic was taken, and without all the late model crap on it, its much cooler looking, but here is what one looks like pulled straight out of a jap car:

The V 2.6L engine was first used in the Crown 8, part of the second generation Crown from 1964 to 1967. Thereafter the Crown 8 was replaced by the upmarket Toyota Century

    • 1967-1973 - 3.0 L (2981 cc) 3V
    • 1973-1983 - 3.4 L (3376 cc) 4V
    • 1983-1998 - 4.0 L (3995 cc) 5V
The 3V, 4V and 5V engines were used in the Toyota Century up until 1997 when it got a complete redesign and gained the 5.0 L 1GZ-FE V12

basically, you are going to have a hard time coming across one. I have only ever seen one in person. While the 4 cyl version was sold in the US, the V-8 was not. Thats not say none of those vehicles ever made it over, they were all however grey market vehicles. Finding one is going to be next to impossible, but isn't that what makes it so fun??

In 2004 there was link here which everyone said "..How cool!," in 2006 another thread was opened on the same subject and all the haters joined in with comments like "ugly jap crap, not traditiona"l and the usual gutter rants i expect from those folks.
I'll let these pics speak for themselves.

I am in the process of planning a track t build. I am planning on using a four cylinder and this one looks pretty interesting. What year and model did this motor come in and what transmissions will bolt to it.

The 5v is very popular down here with hundreds imported in the last few years, they were used in Lexus, Crowns and Soarers. I thought the US Tacomas used them too.

The 4 cyl engine is known as a "2tc" They are super reliable, have plenty of aftermarket support, rev all day long, and are pretty easy to come by. There are cams, intakes, etc... out there.

They came in all kinds of corollas and what not in the 70's and maybe 80's I believe. The transmission I am using is actually a 5 speed out of the same donor car. The motors put out I believe something in the 110-125 HP range in stock form. I have retained the stock 5 speed, and also have a toyota pickup truck rear end to go behind it. They are pretty bullet proof are narrow, and have the early ford bolt pattern. In addition to that, they usually have either 3.73 or 3.90 ratios in them. Not to mention that they are cheap to purchase.

The combination of this power, 5 speed OD transmission, nice ratio in the rear, and a car that weighs nothing equals LOTS OF FUN!!!

I do Toyota Landcruiser resto as a day job and told the guys about the little V8. We're wondering where we can find such a beast to toss into an FJ40 Landcruiser.

  25. The 4cyl Hemi is pretty cool. If it was in something that it wasn't gonna show,it would be a great Modified motor...

Thanks for the info. Guess its time to start searching the yards.
What year Toyota pickup rear end? I did a search and could not find any that were 5X5.5.

  27. Hey t-town-track-t, Back in the '80s my girl friend had a Corrola with the 2TC 1600cc engine, 5 speed, and we found a later 3TC 1800cc and punched it oversize, ported the head, I believe it was PACE that made the header, a adapter for the Weber 2GVC carb, MSD ignition, and the cam we had reground, this car stock ran 20.00 at every local track as she was hooked! With the new combo it went 17.40s! No fireball for sure but at the time it would out run all the "new" 4 cyl cars! But speed being addictive, later she went to a V-8 Vega sleeper! Another story!
