  4. Saddle tanks are hidden outside the frame between it and the splash aprons.

  6. Tanks makes the saddle tanks vtwinsideways is talking about , i have them on my `28 Tudor..they are a pain in the *** to fill. mine are about 15 years old and a see that they have changed the design of the filler neck. maybe they are better now

  7. Just a shot in the dark here, not sure if it will fit, but a friend picked up a slanted tank that mounts vertically behind the seat of an F-1 (I think it was a 1949 ton truck) not sure if it will fit behind the back seat of a sedan or not. Puts the tank back inside with you, but it might be an idea. Not sure how easy they are to find either. I'll see if I can get some measurements and a pic later. Luke

Yeah, tank behind the back seat, but I figure if you dont like the rear mounted 32 style tank, maybe you reasoning would also apply to a tank behind the seat.
I got a custom tank made that fits under the floor behind the ****** and in front of the diff, but you can really only do that if you are running parallel rear 4 bar set up.

My tank holds 23.5 gallons and is low for a good center of gravity and safe surrounded by ch***is metal.

ive been thinking about this too..
may make my own saddle tanks, or make a bulk head behind the rear seat with the bottom open so if there is an event of being rear ended the fuel will not go into the cab of the car.. (Tudor sedan)
or i also have some room either side of the driveshaft inside the frame rails..

I to am wondering what to do about a tank in my 29 sedan, don't want it inside.
The saddle tanks are about 12 gallons I think. That would give 24 if you put one on both sides but several hundred dollars.
Do they make them in steel and poly or just poly.
Does the filler neck come out through the splash aprons?

Go either side of the drive shaft and over the top of it.
Kinder have a U shape cut out for the drive shaft and you will end up with a nice compact tank that can hold a good gas capcity to out run the cops.

How much did it cost you to have that built fiftyv8?
I like that idea maybe the filler hole could be near the bottom of the back panel otherwise I guess it would have to be in the quarter panel.

It is too long ago to recall, but is was made from steel sheet metal with a couple of baffles inside.

I will post a couple of pic's, one of the filler set up and what ever I can find in my folder. I am using a different computer right now but will hopefully get them posted by tuesday.

I got a question; what is this saddle tank look like that everyone is referring to?
In my sedan I went with a spun aluminum tank and mounted it with straps. I made a wood deck in the back for it to sit on. The deck is as high as the back of the seats and is a good place to throw stuff on trips. The fill tube goes at a right angle out the back so I can fill without reaching in.

With this idea you are creating a reserve tank too. Depending on if you have the gas come out of one side or both you could have a shut off valve on one side and then open it when you want your reserve. Most 4 wheeler tanks use this concept.

I run my twin exhaust and mufflers under my splash aprons which leaves all the center area free for a gas tank.

yeah, same here. I'm leaning toward the bulkhead/open bottom idea. Don't want to cover that nice banjo rear I have.

Its too dangerous, if you get in an accident and it broke you would have gas all over your legs and in the car. 31 was the last year the put the tank there for a reason. Newer cars have the tank surrounded by the frame to protect it.

  25. i've always had bad feelings about a stock Model a fuel tanks , but i have never heard any stories of one braking apart and spilling gas in all my years of messing with old Fords. the gas valve dripping fuel yes , the column mount leaking yes.....but not the tank ripping apart

    anyone have a story?

I use the original tank.......the way the tank is made it would most likely keep the fuel outside if it were to suffer damage in a wreck, ole Henry put it where it is to keep it away from damage in a wreck. :)

  28. Got a buddy that was hit by a switcher engine back in the 50's in his '31 A coupe. Mangled the s**t out of the car, bruised him up but he says no gas ever leaked out. He couldn't believe it. He's got a pic of the car afterward, I'll see if he'll let me borrow it. Luke

Edit:He says some did shoot out around the cap.

Here is a pic of the filler set up, still can not find pic's of the gas tank underneath.

Gas door is from a Ford Granada.
